The To Do List

Uploaded to flickr.com by myoldpostcards

With all the excitement of the primaries, this week feels like it has flown by!  Whether you are celebrating victory or wallowing in defeat, there’s lots to do this weekend on the Hill.

Friday
Start your weekend on an educated note at the Congressional Cemetery Wine and Cheese Lecture at 6:00 p.m.  Smithsonian Associate Chair of Anthropology Laurie Burgess will present “Death, Dogs, and Monuments,” a discussion about the history of the cemetery.

For education and inebriation, check out the Spelling Buzz at the Rock & Roll Hotel at 7:00 p.m.  First place wins a $60 bar tab.  After you’ve proven your literacy, stick around for Epic Dance Party, starting at 9:30 p.m.  Cover is free for both events, though $6 at the Spelling Buzz will get you a 16-ounce PBR and a shot of “crap whiskey” until 10:00 p.m.

Saturday
There are only a few weeks left to squeeze in a Victorian Garden Tour at the Folger Shakespeare Library.  Tours are scheduled on Saturday at 10:00 and 11:00 a.m.  While the garden is open year-round, tours will cease in October for the colder months.

As already reported on THIH, Saturday is the H Street Festival, from noon to 6:00 p.m.  Food, drinks, music, a pie eating competition, and a tattoo competition are all part of the festivities.  The Atlas Performing Arts Center will hold an open house throughout the festival day, with free performances and facilities tours.

The Palace of Wonders is even getting into the street festival spirit, presenting the Olde City Side Show from 1:00 p.m. on.  Entry is $5 and includes snacks for the little ones.  Kids are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Sunday
No plans for Sunday?  Why not head over to Eastern Market?  In addition to the usual vendors, there will be live music starting at 10:30 a.m.

No mention of Opera in the Outfield, Washington National Opera’s FREE simulcast of Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” (“A Masked Ball”) at Nationals Park on Sunday afternoon at 2:00? This is one of the Opera’s major community outreach events and has been enjoyed by thousands of DC and Capitol Hill residents for a couple of years now, and should not be missed! What can be better than grand Italian opera enjoyed with beer and a hot dog? (If that’s your thing…)

    You’re right! No mention.

Mi Vecindad also has their grand opening this weekend. On Saturday the 18th Henry has invited everyone out to celebrate his new outpost. And knowing him, it will be fun for the whole family.
