As you may have noticed while walking around the neighborhood, there are some elections going on. We’d love to cover them all as in-depth as possible, but alas, there are only so many hours in a day! But we do intend to help you get the information you need on Ward 6 races so you can make an informed decision on election day. (If you have any interest in helping us with our election coverage, please email me at ClaudiaTheHillisHome at gmail dot com)
A few questions have come up that we would like to clarify. First, we do not intend to endorse any candidates. With so many contributors, it is rare we agree on anything, and politics is no exception. But we like it that way — it makes for some fun debates and conversations and (we hope) adds some variety to the blog. And I would like to clarify something about my post calling for people to run for ANC — that post was not an attack on any incumbent and I figured it went without saying that anyone thinking of running should do a bit of homework first. But apparently I needed to spell it out to keep a few people happy. I still stand by what I said — if you care about your neighborhood, consider running! I firmly believe that competition is a good thing, and the more people who come out to get involved, the better the neighborhood will be for it. If you don’t think you have what it takes to be a commissioner, that’s okay too. Start attending your monthly meetings or join one of the committees instead. But whatever you do, get involved!
Now that I have all of that out of the way, let’s get back to to talking about who is running! We have created an Elections 2010 Page on the site (you can find the link at the top of the page) that we will regularly update with basic information on candidates for the Ward 6 races. It is pretty bare-bones right now but please keep checking back as I will add much more information in the upcoming weeks.
The latest numbers are in from the the DC Board of Elections and Ethics for the ANC races! I have included a rundown of the Ward 6 ANC candidates as listed by DCBEE on August 10, 2010. You’ll notice that there are currently a lot of empty seats — that is simply because candidates have until September 3 to pick up a nomination petition and return it with 25 signatures. So expect this list to grow quickly over the next two weeks. DCist also noticed yesterday that “Ward 6 seems to be the most engaged when it comes to ANC competition — it lays claim to seven of the 19 contested seats, including one of only two three-way races in the city (the other is in Ward 5).” Go Ward 6! Remember, all of these candidates need to turn in 25 signatures by September 3, so there is still plenty of time for challengers to drop out, or for new ones to jump in. As we get closer to the elections, we will bring you information about the candidates in any contested race so you can learn more about them and how they will represent you if they are elected.
