Hill Buzz

I hope you all had a great and safe holiday weekend!  The neighborhood fireworks shows were certainly impressive this year — from where I watched the big “official” show atop one of the House office buildings, I was able to see fireworks shows in Virginia, Maryland, and in several of the nearby Capitol Hill parks from the roof.  Illegal or not, I love the neighborhood displays that others may hate, I love the big show on the Mall, and just about everything else that comes with a Fourth of July celebration — BBQs, pool parties, sparkly and patriotic decorations — it’s a great holiday weekend.  And now we’re back at work, which I am actually thankful for since 100 degrees is too hot for just about anything outdoors.

  • Famous DC listed the top five lunch spots on Capitol Hill.
  • DCist highlighted the new signage along H Street letting people know that businesses are, in fact, open for business during construction.
  • The Washington Post ran yet another story on the stalled development around the Ballpark.
  • H Street Great Street noted that Washingtonian voted H Street Country Club the best place for a blind date.
  • Frozen Tropics announced another fundraiser for the Argonaut — this Thursday at the Palace of Wonders.  “Want to arm wrestle a DC Roller Girl? Win a raffle prize from an H Street venue? OR drink up some PBR and shake your booty? How about all of the above for the love of the Argonaut?”  I’ll give $5 to anyone who can actually win an arm wrestling competition against a DC Roller Girl.  Wait, I’m poor because this gig at THIH doesn’t pay, but we will give you a shout out!
  • DCist reported that Wal-Mart may be coming to the intersection of Bladensburg Road and New York Avenue.

And a quick request for anyone who had their camera out this weekend to add your photos to our Flickr pool!  Because I am sure you all got much better shots and video than I did!  I forgot my camera when I went to Sunday’s parade, but I did get the marching band:

At the risk of sounding anti-Argonaut, what are these fundraisers raising bucks for? I’d hope and assume the Argo had insurance. If the events are to raise funds for now-out-of-work staff in the interim that’s totally admirable.

  2. @Jon, the fundraisers are for the staff to help them out until the Argo can get up and running again. So yes, it’s definitely a good cause!

Thanks for the clarification. Glad to see the community supporting each other.

The potential of a Wal-Mart would be great for the people of the area, but there’s already the oft-overlooked Hyattsville Wal-Mart just a short jaunt down New York Ave and up the Baltimore/Washington Parkway. It’s at least as close, in terms of drive time, to the Hill as the Target in NoVa, and, unlike the new location, isn’t subject to nasty things like bag or soft drink taxes.

It’s one of the most-overlooked retail resources in the area because most people just don’t seem to realize it’s even there.
