Local Business: Studio Juno

Like the American bison that once roamed the plains, the ubiquitous Sears Portrait Studio baby picture is now virtually extinct.  I personally have loads with the cloudy blue background, oftentimes sitting or leaning on a bench of some sort covered in brown shag carpet.  And yes, I have the picture-within-a-picture: me smiling adorably at the camera with a fuzzy-edged, more poetic and contemplative side of my personality starting off into space in the corner of the photo over my shoulder. (If you’re unfamiliar with this style of high photographic art, there’s a lovely example here.  My own shall never see the light of day.)

Thanks to Northeast resident and professional photographer Leah Stern, you can have family or special event photos that you’ll proudly display on your walls, not mock on random websites.  As the owner of Studio Juno, Stern does on-location portraits for engagements, families and couples, as well as wedding ceremonies and sometimes even dabbles in food photography.

Describing her style as trying to “catch people being relaxed,” Stern often uses neighborhood locations as the backdrop for her photo sessions.  She described a recent shoot where she met a couple for engagement photos.  They started out at Sova where the subjects were able to have a glass of wine and relax a bit.  Then they started taking photos there, with the fun colors and stained glass windows.  From Sova, they moved on to H Street Country Club for pictures upstairs, using the wrought iron details as a background.  “It’s a photographer’s dream with all the colors and textures,” she says of this local bar and restaurant with its own mini-golf course.  “They’ve been so cool about letting me use the space,” said Stern of Sova and H Street Country Club.  The couple then walked down Maryland Ave, NE, by an old firehouse and down to Stanton Park for some outdoor shots.  After a loop around Union Station, they came back to the park and finished up.

Most sessions with Stern last one to two hours and she does them in all kinds of locations: peoples’ homes, backyards, parks, wherever they’d like.  “My biggest thing is to keep people comfortable and having a good time.  I like happy, natural pictures,” explains Stern.
