Eggs and Easter seem to go together well: originally the egg was a symbol of rebirth and life and the renewal of the circle of life that happens in spring. Later, it took on the added meaning of resembling Christ’s sealed tomb– a symbol of faith and resurrection for Christianity. No matter which way you look at it, the Easter egg is a neat little package that over the years has lent itself to all kinds of decoration and pageantry; from the beautifully ornate golden spun masterpieces of Fabergé to endearingly clumsy child decorations, the versatile egg can handle it all with class.
Easter Egg events, from that one highbrow affair up Pennsylvania Avenue (did you manage to score tickets?) to looking for eggs at the local hardware store, are always fun for everyone. If you’re looking for an Easter Egg Hunt in Capitol Hill, you have several options over the weekend:
One of the most popular events on the Hill around Eastertide is the Easter Eggstravaganza, which is organized by the National Community Church. Although for the past couple of years it’s been held at Garfield Park, this year the Eggstravaganza is back to Lincoln Park, between 11th and 13th Streets along East Capitol Street, on Saturday, April 3rd at 1:00 PM. The Easter Bunny will make an appearance, naturally, and there will be balloon artists, face painting, and enough sugar to rocket about three thousand children into space.
If secularity with a dash of fun is your thing, make it Frager’s! That’s right: the beloved hardware store located at the corner of 11th and Pennsylvania, SE, will welcome the Easter Bunny on Saturday the 3rd, from 12 noon until 3 PM. They will also hide eggs in the nuts, bolts, washers, seeds and any other nook and cranny you can imagine all throughout the day.
Looking for an indoor option for Saturday? Friends of the Northeast Library (330 7th St, NE) is sponsoring an egg hunt at 10:30 AM following the regular Music and Movement class on the library’s second floor. While you’re there, check out the building’s exterior renovations.
If you would like to worship before you and your family indulge in the fun, you can go to St. Peter’s Catholic Church’s Easter Sunday 11 AM service and stay for the Easter Egg hunt right afterward. St. Peter’s is located at 313 2nd Street, SE. If you would rather attend a Protestant service before you try swiping the eggs from the greedy eight-year olds, then you can go to the Parish of St. James and St. Monica, 222 Eighth St., NE, and partake of their 10 AM service beforehand.
For the early birds, the First District substation at 5th and E streets, SE, will be sugaring kids up on Thursday, April 1st, directly across the street from the station at Marion Park’s playground. That’s no April Fool!
Finally, if you would rather just hide some great-looking eggs around your house, here is an instructional video on how to decorate eggs in fun ways from Hill resident Karen Kormondy.
