Another cold but (reasonably) sunny weekend coming up, so if you’re all done with your shopping, it’s time to see what Capitol Hill has to offer.
If you’re in need of some reading material to tide you over the Christmas break, or just need some more stocking-stuffers, the Friends of Southeast Library can help. This Saturday, from 10 am until 3 pm, they’ll be selling the books that have been pouring in over the last two months. There are lots of kids books, and as a special draw, the Friends will have an extra table of present-ready books: books that are still good enough to give. And the price can’t be beat: most books are a buck or less, only coffee table books run a bit more
Hanukkah starts this weekend, and there will be a menorah lighting ceremony on the Ellipse on Sunday. There will be speeches, music, and activities for the kids as well. More information here
Sweets for the sweet. There will be a cupcake sale in front of Tortilla Cafe on Saturday the 12th. Proceeds go to support events for the children of deaf parents. The famous Surprise Snicker cupcake will be available, as well as holiday cupcakes such as Royal Red and White (red velvet cupcake with cream cheese), Double V-Vanilla (with vanilla bean frost), and Lollipoppy stars (Hanukkah Lollipop, Kwanzaa Lollipop, and Teddy Bear’s Christmas Lollipop cupcakes).
And speaking of supporting local institutions, Maury Elementary parents and friends will be selling Christmas cards on the 12th as well. See their stand rounding the bend toward Eastern Market at North Carolina Avenue SE outside Port City Java from 10 am until 4 pm.
Santa will be on Barrack’s Row this Saturday from 2 pm until 4 pm. More information here.
And if you’re looking for a new twist on an old standard, check out the Hip Hop Nutcracker, which will be performed this weekend at Stuart Hobson Middle School. Momentum Dance Theatre has taken Ellington’s score and made it their own, combining the jazz, swing, and blues with hip-hop and club music. More information here. Performances on the 12th at 3 pm and 8 pm, and on the 13th at 8 pm.
Last, but certainly not least, the Palace of Wonders presents the Lucky Daredevil Thrillshow! A ‘fast paced and funny, death-defying daredevil stunt spectacular with all the glitter, glamour, and gut-wrenching thrills of a Vegas show’ according to their website. More information here.
