Cinco de Mayo on The Hill

As everyone knows, today marks the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. This historic event, better known as Cinco de Mayo, has long provided Americans with an excuse to party like it’s St. Patrick’s Day with margaritas. Here’s a rundown of some places to celebrate on the Hill.

The Bullpen
The Bullpen at National’s Stadium will be hosting the world’s best cover band*, Sick Feed, for its Cinco de Mayo party. The band will be playing both before and after the Nationals vs. Braves game — from around 6:00-7:30 and then again from around 9:30-11:30. Sick Feed specializes in songs that everyone knows every word to, and will be giving away some free sombreros. 1299 Half Street SE, directly across from the baseball stadium. (Note: My praise is hardly objective, I’m the guitarist.)

H Street Country Club
For the holiday, the H Street Country Club will be offering $5.00 margaritas, $3.00 Dos Equis, and $2.00 tacos all night long. They’ll also be registering people for the Dos Equis Millionaire contest (don’t get too excited, they payout is in pesos). They also promise some piñatas. 1335 H Street NE.

La Loma
A favorite for Capitol Hill staffers, La Loma will surely be packed tonight. The restaurant has an extensive tequila selection, great margaritas (both frozen and on the rocks), and a sweet and citrusy sangria. The weather should be perfect – so try to get there early to increase your chances of getting a table on the patio. 316 Massachusetts Avenue NE.

Banana Café
Banana Café, which offers $3.00 margaritas every night as part of Happy Hour, should also be packed tonight. And they too have an outdoor patio. 500 8th Street, SE.

Tunnicliff’s Tavern
CHAMPS, the Capitol Hill Association of Merchants and Professionals, will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo at Tunnicliff’s Tavern. Five bucks will get you $4.00 glasses of wine, $3.00 rail drinks, $3.00 Sierra Nevada, $2.00 Bud Light, margarita specials, free appetizers, and a sombrero contest! What more could you ask for? CHAMPS is asking people to register here. 222 7th Street, SE.
