It’s a holiday weekend, so it may be time to fire up the grill. Want to make it a tastebud experience your guests won’t soon forget? Consider heading over to Sapore Oil and Vinegar, located at 660 Pennsylvania Ave, SE for a bottle of Bipartisian Barbecue Sauce for a nuanced and HOT sauce. If you want to taste the sauce before slathering in on the ribs, stop by the tasting on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nicole Shields Farr, the store’s owner, did give me a warning. She advised to be conservative with your portions. She and co-founder (and husband) John Farr worked with friends who have a sauce company in California to perfect the recipe. I can’t remember another sauce that includes fig concentrate and that’s where the underlying flavors start. Of course, the ancho chili and chipolte is what you’re likely to remember. The two ingredients, together with brown sugar and natural hickory seasons, get along far better than our friends in the Congress. The sauces costs $9.95.

You’ll find other provisions at Sapore that will make your summer meals sing. Although it’s ideal for grilling meats, chicken and fish, think outside the box and use the Brown Sugar Rub on your grilled peaches or acorn squash. You’ll also find Flying Pig BBQ Rub, and Bourbon Worcestershire Sauce, as well as more olive oils and vinegars than there are lobbyist on Capitol Hill each day. (It was hard to resist a last jab!)

Happy Memorial Day everyone. Take a look at this Library of Congress link about the first Memorial Day in 1861 and remember that it’s really not about the grill and pool.
