I’ve always loved the month of August. First, it’s the month that I was born, and until recently I made my birthday celebrations week-long events. It’s also the month that kids and adults alike head back to school. As a kid, advertisements encouraging families to buy new school wardrobes and school supplies (hello, Trapper Keepers) were almost as exciting as the arrival of the new Ikea catalog!
After you’ve read about what THIH writers did this past weekend, tell us about your weekend. Don’t forget to mention what you love about August!
Jon : My first weekend in the DC area in since July 4. We started the weekend with a trip to Centreville to visit friends. My wife enjoyed some spa time with the ladies while the dads took the kids to see a children’s singer who dresses as a pirate and sings made-up sea songs. Filed in the “things I never thought I’d do” category. Sunday was spent doing yardwork followed by a trip to Eastern Market and Frager’s, rounded out with a dinner of homemade gazpacho and peach crisp.
Sharee: On Saturday morning I finally introduced my better half to the joys of breakfast at the Capital City Diner. Pigs in a blanket, you have captured my heart! That helped us steel ourselves for a trek out to Virginia horse country for a night in a B&B and to see Kings of Leon at Jiffy Lube Live. Because yes, its far enough out there that we considered it an overnight trip.
Maria: Had a mellow weekend enjoying the nice weather around the Hill and at Cheverly Pool.
Tim: Just hung out around the Hill. This is not a bad thing.
Jen: Baked cupcakes for the kind girl ferrying my tiny puppy to my sister’s place in Durham. Drove to Jersey cursing the cursed state of Delaware on Saturday. Sunday was last minute freakout time which resulted in me cutting my own bangs before boarding a plane bound for Geneva, once again regretting not practicing my abysmal French. Shutting off phone…. now.
Nichole: Started the weekend at happy hour at Toyland on Friday which morphed into drinks on friends’ patio. Saturday morning I volunteered at Arts on N, came home and took a luxurious nap before grilling and drinking beer on my patio with the neighbors. Sunday was more Arts on N followed by babysitting over in Petworth.
Kyra: I started my weekend at Ikea on Friday morning (a great time to beat the weekend rush and take in all that the new catalog has to offer). On Saturday we put the baby in her bike seat and headed over the bridge and along the Mt. Vernon trail to Alexandria for a tour of the Friendship Firehouse. Sunday was spent back home, where we enjoyed a trip to the park and a stop at Prego, two things we never take for granted.

Visited the H Street farmer’s market, grilled with the neighbors, and checked out a great photography exhibit at the Air and Space Museum, Beyond: Visions of Our Solar System. The exhibit was surprisingly peaceful while the rest of the museum was packed with tourists.
