Meals on Wheels: Food Trucks on the Hill

Like them (or not) food trucks have been making the rounds on Capitol Hill lately, and the culinary offerings go way beyond the traditional $2.50 for a hot dog, chips and soda (not that there’s anything wrong with this option at times!) From sweet treats (Curbside Cupcakes I’m talking to you) to delectable lobster rolls that tug on the heartstrings of New England to DC transplants (Red Hook), the options are abundant when it comes to well, standing in line to buy food from a truck.

Have you tried any of the sandwiches from El Floridano? I haven’t, but they look tasty. What about Sabor’a Street and their delicious tacos? And they have churros, people! Can’t keep up with your favorite truck as it moves through the city? The Truckeroo 2 festival is Friday, July 15th at Half and M Street, SE across from the Navy Yard Metro Station. The event is free admission and will feature at least 20 food trucks as well as live music.

DC isn’t the only city in the midst of a food truck craze and we know there are many more roaming the district. Have you stood in the sweltering heat in pursuit of the perfect lunch? Which truck is your favorite? Do they add to the city or detract from traditional eating establishments?

LOVE me some Tasty Kabob. Food is consistently delicious, reasonably priced, and the service is friendly.

I would like to point out that multiple owners and operators of food trucks live on Capitol Hill. They are your neighbors and are working hard to add a fun new element to DC. Curbside, Red Hook, and PORC are examples right off the top of my head.

I’m kind of obsessed with the Mumbai Butter Chicken wrap from Sauca. I love the food truck “craze,” and am happy to support these innovative entrepreneurs.
