Remember those 8 am labs in college? Yeah, neither does anybody else because nobody ever went. The team at Affinity Lab may change your mind, though. They’ve commandeered the former R.L. Christian Library kiosk on H Street, NE at the corner of 13th Street as a Pop-up Lab offering a collaborative workspace during designated hours for members of the community and hosting special events during Digital Capital Week. For instance, tonight at 6 pm Greater Greater Washington‘s David Alpert will be speaking about urban development and blogging at “The Art of the Blog.” Throughout the week, those who stop by the kiosk will have access to computers and the Internet and be met by knowledgeable volunteers staffing the space that can offer business guidance and advice to members of the local community.
Running June 11-20, Digital Capital Week is “a 10 day festival in Washington DC focused on technology, innovation and all things digital in our nation’s capital.” Yes, we sometimes forget that politics isn’t the only stock-in-trade in our fair, humid city. The organizers of DC Week want to strengthen and highlight our digital economy through a series of events throughout the region. With a focus on “creativity, technology, entrepreneurship, marketing, content creation, and innovation”, the week’s events range from workshops on combating HIV in DC with social media to clinics aimed at helping performing artists use the web to their advantage.
In addition to serving as a collaborative workspace, two Pop-up Lab volunteers are visiting neighborhood businesses as part of the “Put YOU on the Map Project.” The project aims to reach out to H Street businesses and learn about their stories. They’ll also use the information collected to update H Street Main Street’s neighborhood map, offering a revitalized outlet for promoting the street’s businesses.
DCWeek events on H Street also coincide with Thursday’s ARTventures on H.
