Capitol Hill Arts Workshop’s August 2015 Events

CHAW-logoThe Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) presents the following events in August 2015:

Thursday-Saturday, July 30-August 1 & August 6-8CHAW Presents Gilbert & Sullivans Trial by Jury and selections from The Yeomen of the Guard – CHAW’s annual summer of Gilbert & Sullivan is back in full–and, as always, slightly twisted–form!  Join us for an evening or afternoon of song, wordplay, and fun.  Performances take place in the accolade-winning Black Box Theatre at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th St. SE, at 7:30pm with 3pm matinees on Saturdays,August 1 & 8.  Tickets are $20 with a special $10 matinee on August 1 and may be purchased by calling CHAW at 202-547-6839, or by emailing Brian Washington at bwashington@chaw.org.

Saturday, August 1 Art & Beer @ Wunder Garten  This family-friendly event will take place 3pm-5pm at Wunder Garten, a pop-up beer garden in NOMA, located at 150 M St., NE.  We’ll have creative art activities led by a CHAW teaching artist for kids (and kids-at-heart), as well as beer for grown-ups (they can be kids-at-heart, but must also be 21+).  Join us for this special community partnership and help support #PaintBucket2015 while you’re at it!  FREE and open to the public. Saturday, August 8 Youth Arts Program Registration Event & CHAW Dance StoreWe are beyond excited to unveil our brand new Youth Arts Program, beginning this fall.  Online registration starts July 20, but we think registering is always more fun with friends and food.  Join us at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th St. SE on August 8 from 11am to 2pm for on-site registration, snacks, and mingling.  Special attention to Dance Families: From 11am to 2pm on the same day, we will be holding a special CHAW Dance Store, where you can purchase all dance accoutrements at a discount before fall classes begin.  You’ll have the opportunity to meet and chat with our CHAWsome Dance Department teaching artists while you shop.  Free and open to any and all interested families!

Friday, August 14 Friday ARTnights: Paint & Sip Join the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for Paint and Sip, part of CHAW’s new Friday ARTnights program, for an evening of painting and wine on Friday, August 14, 2015 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Receive step-by-step instruction from CHAW teaching artists Ellen Cornett and Sheppard Bear as you create your own masterpiece, all while enjoying snacks and wine. $30 includes all materials and refreshments. Friday, August 14Friday ARTnights: The Art & History of Burlesque Have you ever been a curious kitten about the art of burlesque? Unleash that inner tiger with CHAW’s burlesque workshop. Come to this two-hour class and learn a sassy routine that will leave you with a wiggle and wink you never knew you had. There is no dance experience needed and no nudity involved. The class is part lecture and part movement. Guests will not only perform beginner burlesque dance moves, but also learn about the history of burlesque and the dancers who still perform the art to this day. $25 includes a fun 2-hour dance workshop fit for all levels and a little history on the form on the side.   The workshop takes place 6:30pm-8:30pm onFriday, August 14 at CHAW, 545 7th St. SE.  For more information and to register, visit www.chaw.org.

Saturday, August 15“The Callback” Workshop with Special Guest Yolanda Hunt, BET’s Casting Consultant & Associate A full day to work with and learn from one of the busiest casting directors. This workshop includes: Mock One-on-One Audition with Yolanda; Cold Reading Practice; Headshot / Resume Review; Learn the Business of Acting with Mark; Q&A with Yolanda; Commercial Audition Techniques / Practice. The workshop will take place at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7thSt. SE, 1:30pm-9:00pm and doors will open at 1:15pm.  A one-hour lunch break is included.  Cost is $190, and there are only 30 seats being sold for this workshop.  For more information and to register, visit www.chaw.org.

Fridays, August 7 & 21Friday ARTnights: Drop-In Figure Drawing The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) hosts a drop-in “Working from the Figure” session on Friday, August 7 and 21, 2015 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Work on drawings or paintings in front of a live model in a session without formal instruction, facilitated by artist Will Fleishell. Please bring your own drawing materials. Easels are available. Friday, August 21 Friday ARTnights: Clay & Cabernet – Join the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for Painting Clay & Sipping Cabernet, part of CHAW’s new Friday ARTnights program, for an evening of clay tile painting and wine sipping onFriday, August 21, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th St., SE.  In this workshop, teaching artist Clay Hollenkamp will introduce attendees to the frisket technique–using stencils and paint on clay tiles–in a relaxed and fun happy hour atmosphere. $40 includes all materials and refreshments.  Tickets available through our event page on www.chaw.org, or by calling CHAW at 202-547-5839.
