There is something wonderful about the first few days of Spring. Every sunny day feels like a gift from the meteorological gods — and so far the gods are giving us two sunny days out of three this weekend. College basketball and complex brackets filled with schools we’ve never heard of are all we can talk about, including the President. And don’t forget about the National Marathon, which weaves it’s way around the District each March, inviting Hill residents to join in the fun by rooting for racers or bemoan a route that keeps us trapped on the Hill for a better part of the day. (But what’s to complain about when the Hill offers so many great things to do!?) All that’s left are the arrivals of the cherry blossoms and the Washington Nationals before we can say that Spring has officially arrived in the District.
Friday, March 19
It’s day two of March Madness; where are you watching the tournament and checking your bracket?
Broadcast journalist and television personality Hoda Kotb will deliver the keynote address for the Library of Congress’s month-long celebration of Women’s History Month. The event will be held at 5pm in the Montpelier Room, located on the sixth floor of the Library’s James Madison Building. The event is free and open to the public.
Saturday, March 20
If you are not participating in Saturday‘s National Marathon, be sure to spend some time Saturday morning along the marathon’s race route cheering for race participants. The race starts at 7am outside RFK and the DC Armory. It’s also not too late to volunteer and get a free t-shirt.
The Library of Congress is celebrating the centennial of Herb Block with an exhibition of 82 of the political cartoonist’s drawings, which are on exhibit in the James Madison building now through April.
Whether you believe in supporting Hill schools or you simply want a chance to kick back at a Nats game with Councilmember Tommy Wells, be sure to check out Maury at the Market at 7pm on Saturday. The silent auction, which features, among other things, two tickets to a Nats game as the guest of Councilmember Wells and a number of gift certificates from local Hill businesses, benefits Maury Elementary School.
Sunday, March 21
The Capital City Symphony, together with Charlie Barnett and his band Chaise Lounge, presents Symphony Lounge at the Atlas Performing Arts Center Sunday evening. Tickets are available online or at the box office.
If you are looking for something more frightful for Sunday night, stop by the Rock & Roll Hotel for their free Horror Movie Triple Feature on “No Show Sundays.” The Hotel sets the scene with “creepy, old church pew seating” and a 10-foot movie screen. The venue opens at 6pm and movies start at 7 pm. While the popcorn and movies are free, the themed cocktails are not. Must be 21 or older.
What are you doing this weekend, besides enjoying the beautiful weather?
