Tonight the Talk of the Hill series continues at the Hill Center. Journalist and Hill resident Bill Press sits down with Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute and Thomas Mann of the Brookings Institution to offer insight into hot topics and complex issues of the day. Seating for this event is on a first come, first serve basis, so please arrive early to guarantee your seat. This weekend we celebrate Mom, and Tabula Rasa is taking this charge very seriously. The gorgeous event and pop up retail venue on Barracks Row is hosting a pop-up shop by the popular U Street boutique Lettie Gooch all weekend long beginning Friday at 11am. Saturday evening from 5pm-9pm is Hello Gorgeous an event when ladies can indulge in make up application, hair touch ups and even a mini- photography session by Hill photographer (and mom) Elizabeth Dranitzke. Manicures and henna sessions are available too and Host/owner Amanda Clarke will be pouring prosecco. General admission is $10 or $15 for you and a guest. Read all about it here.
Friday night the Atlas presents red, black and GREEN: a blues a performance created by the nationally renowned artists and arts educator Marc Bamuthi Joseph. Joseph is here performing this powerful theatre/spoken word/dance/hip hop piece which looks at environmentalism and sustainability and how those issues resonate within communities of color. While it is absolutely about an important topic it is also an entertaining night at the theatre. The show runs Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 3pm. Tickets are available here.
Cello Goddess Maya Beiser (who has been know to rock some Zeppelin) and pianist Michael Harrison released Time Loops in 2012, one of NPR’stop ten classical albums of the year. They bring their contemporary classical sound to the Atlas. The concert begins at 8pm. Tickets are $25/$15 students and are available here.
Saturday morning the Sherwood Neighborhood Volunteers is hosting a Spring Clean up and planting from 9am-11:30. The kindly neighbors at the Argonaut will provide breakfast to fuel the workers. Come out and meet your neighbors!
BuildOn DC, a local all-volunteer group, is hosting a community carnival at Eastern High School to raise money to send students to Malawi this summer to build a school. The event will feature a variety of kid and adult-friendly games, including bocce, croquet, and cornhole and feature live music. Proceeds from the event will help buildOn DC to send six Eastern Senior High School students to Malawi this summer to build a school. Admission is free. $2 per game or $5 for three games. This weekend is also the 56th Annual House and Garden Tour sponsored by the The Capitol Hill Restoration Society. This year’s theme is Old Traditions, New Beginnings,” showcases houses that developed along with the early Federal government. The charming Duddington place neighborhood is featured this year along with the Capitol Hill Day School building. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the tour. They can be purchased at www.chrs.org or at the CHRS booth at Eastern Market.
Saturday night, the band Bullmoose (soulful rock from the streets of Washington, DC) will take the stage at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Tickets are $10 and the show starts at 9pm. Doors open at 8pm which will give you some time to sample treats from the Hote’s new menu.
Sunday is Mother’s Day. I hope you have made your reservations. But if your mom is a late riser why not surprise her with a Mother’s Day tea at the Hill Center. Between 3pm and 5:30pm tea and refreshments from the Silver Spork will be on hand while you can take a docent led tour through the galleries while enjoying the music of pianist and vocalist Kendall Isadore
