The To Do List

The chill in the air and shortening days seems to activate the “it’s almost winter, we better get busy and take care of the raking, gutters, windows, etc, etc” nagging voices in my head. So what do I do? Look for as many diversions for the weekend as possible.

The Atlas premiers noted journalist, author and playwright Janet Langhart Cohen’s critically-acclaimed one-act play Anne & Emmett tonight. The production, by award-winning director Talvin Wilks, runs through Sunday, with evening and mattinee performances all weekend. Anne & Emmett is an imaginary conversation between Anne Frank and Emmett Till, both victims of racial intolerance and hatred. ($35-15).

Head on over to CHAW on Saturday for their ARTdays’ Kids Euro Festival. They’re hosting “Step by Step-Journey of Life” from Germany as part of the Kids Euro Festival on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 10 and 11:30 a.m. Follow along and watch your simple steps become lively and magical games, as dances and short stories bring the world to the audience’s feet in this lyrical performance from Germany. Admission is free and open to ages three and up.

Support your local schools! Spend some time and a few bucks at the 6th Annual Brent Elementary Fall Festival at 301 North Carolina Avenue on Saturday morning. Events featuring face painting, kids music, an obstacle course, a moon bounce, and lots of tasty treats are part of the $5 entrance fee and the fun begins at 10 a.m.

Strange as it sounds, one of the prettiest neighborhood places to take in the fall leaves is on the grounds of the Congressional Cemetery. Yes, your friends will find your choice odd, but this Sunday at 11:30 a.m. you can take in the view while celebrating the 157th birthday of John Philip Sousa with music from the Marine Band and musings from John Philip himself on the 100th anniversary of his world tour. Add some playful pups romping nearby and it’s the perfect cemetery experience.

The Fridge opens a new exhibit this wekend, featuring works by nearly 70 graffiti and street artists, so stop by Saturday night from 7-11 p.m. to see Above the Radar II. On Sunday, from 2-4 p.m. several artists and exhibition curator Luna George will hold a mural workshop at Garfield Park “Bridge Spot,” finishing up work they started last weekend.

On Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. musicians Frank Solivan and Megan McCormick will take the stage together at the Corner Store. ($25). These multi-instrumentalist cousins will show off new and old songs, will play solo and together, and they promise to rock the house, or store.
