Explore neighborhood history and culture at the annual DC Community Heritage Project Summer Symposium

Yes, we all know the neighborhood is crawling with history and historic buildings and places where one old diplomat did something to another old diplomat—Robert, our resident historian, is always keen to remind us of these things.  But haven’t you ever wanted to geek out a little more over all this DC heritage?

Now you can, June 28th from 6:30-8:30 PM at the annual DC Community Heritage Project Summer Symposium held in the Deanwood Recreation Center and Library. The free event is composed of three sessions, each targeted to help you make connections with more DC locals and history buffs.

The first session, hosted by historian Carrie Thornhill, will teach you all about finding neighborhood “griots” — that person around town who knows all the neighborhood stories. The second session will focus more on digital history and cataloging, hosted by Sharon Leon from the George Mason University Center for History and New Media.

The final session is a little different and a little spooky, focusing on the cemetery as a key place to learn about local history. Anne Brockett of the DC Historic Preservation Office and Tyrone General of the Historic Woodlawn Cemetery Perpetual Care Foundation will discuss how to look for all the cemetery’s hidden stories.
