It seems as soon as spring enters the picture, after we’ve been couch potatoes over the winter months, life gets really busy. For the last few weeks, I feel like life has been moving at a marathon pace, but though I’m in the same race, I’m running a 5K and barely keeping up. The last few weekends have been full of races, beer tastings, and just general fun. This weekend looks a little quieter; it looks like your days can be filled in one of your favorite Hill parks with a picnic lunch and a good book. Your nights however, can be filled at a number of theatre productions and also with a few drunk dead guys scattered in for variety.
You can kick Friday night off with a show at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop. The Taffety Punk Theater will be performing “Dance Craze”, which is a three week show that is showcasing different performances each weekend. This is the last weekend, and this weekend will be Taffety Punk’s co-founder and original choreographer, Erin Mitchell’s return with “Among the Porcelain” featuring unreleased music by The Routineers & Soccer Team. The show starts at 8 p.m., and if you have plans on Friday night, you can catch it again on Saturday at 3 p.m. and again at 8 p.m.
If a night in a cemetery with a speakeasy theme and maybe some cocktails are more your thing, then get your ghoul on over to the Historic Congressional Cemetery for LAST CALL: Congressional Cemetery’s Prohibition Tour. The tour will include tales of Washington residents who just couldn’t quit the bottle and a spirit or two in the cemetery’s own Speakeasy for the night- the 1832 Public Vault. Tickets are $75 and the tour begins at 7 p.m.
On Saturday morning, before your picnic in park, head back to The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop for a “Porch Art” Workshop. Using scrap and found materials, break out your inner maker and create wind-chimes, mobiles, and dream catchers.
After getting your dance on at Friday’s night production and than creating beautiful art, you might want to embrace more creativity. Head over to the Atlas Center for Performing Arts to choose between two performances. At 8 p.m. on Saturday, SpeakEasy DC-Woman on Top: Tips from Mom, Dad, and COSMO. SpeakeasyDC presents Comedian Vijai Nathan’s one woman show is a hilarious performance about a young girl trying to figure out sex and romance. If that’s a little t0o salacious for you, The Library of Congress will be on location at the Atlas with the U.S. Army Band performing “Pershings Own”. This concert will also be at 8 p.m.
On Sunday, after being inspired by so many kinds of art, you could decide to close the weekend out with one more trip to the theater. The Atlas Performing Arts Center will be hosting a free concert with the DC Youth Orchestra who will be performing Concert for Family, Friends, & Community, which will begin at 4 p.m.
The weekend will be entertaining with a little relaxation, just in time to prepare you for all of the outdoor grilling next weekend.

Don’t forget to Bike to Work on Friday for Bike to Work Day! There’s a pitstop (free breakfast) at Eastern Market, and also downtown at Freedom Plaza.
If you’re looking to ride with someone for that first trip, several commuter convoy routes are passing right through the Hill. I’m leading one from the Yes Organic Market to Eastern Market, and then over the Capitol to downtown. Get in touch with me if you want to join in!
