The kids are back at school, folks have unpacked their summer suitcases, and fall is here! A few things to keep on your radar this weekend:
On Saturday and Monday, a group of Maury Elementary School PTA members, joined by screening professionals, and Councilman Tommy Wells, will help “take the pain” out of volunteering.

To volunteer in any DC public school, one must get TB tested and submit to a DCPS background investigation. Maury Elementary is taking the pain out of these steps by bringing them to you. On Saturday, TB tests ($15) will be offered in front of Port City Java, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. To get your results and for fingerprinting, go to Maury (1230 Constitution Ave, NE) on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Once cleared, you can volunteer in any DC public school. CHAMPS has partnered with Maury Elementary parents and teachers to create Power Hour. All it takes is one hour per week in your choice of activity at the school. You can be a Storybook Superstar, or Lunchroom Lieutenant or Recess Ranger! Who wouldn’t want that on their resume?
One of the little known secrets of the Hill is the Capitol Rowing Club, which meets on the Anacostia River near the 11th Street Exon. The club offers everything from community rowing classes to beginners, an annual Youth River Sports Day, and of course, competitive men’s and women’s teams that attend races throughout the country. On Saturday they’re hosting their annual gala, their major fundraising event that supports the good works they do in the city throughout the year. The Coming of Age Gala will be held at the Motion Picture Association at 8 p.m., and auction items include everything from massage gift certificates to rowing gear.
For parents of hearing kids, The Family Room now offers Kindermusic Sign & Sing for parents of hearing children. The class meets this Saturday (and through the fall) from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. The curriculum will include ASL sign language training, a tool to help language development and promoted as a cornerstone family-based education.
Also on Saturday, from 3 to 5 p.m., the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop holds an open house. Guests can participate in activities such as clay modeling, pastel painting, sing-alongs, and drawing demonstrations.
Next week, you can learn a little bit more about the homes the give Capitol Hill its charm. Join the Capitol Hill Restoration Society‘s Preservation Cafe on Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. at Ebenezer’s Coffeehouse for “What Style Is It?” Architect Bruce Wentworth will discuss the distinctive architecture styles found in the neighborhood.
