I hope you’re having a great Spooky Season. Capitol Hill and DC are really great when it comes to reveling in magic and mischief– some would say, especially the mischief. So what’s been going on?
I have had several people reach out to me asking for voting advice and here are a few thoughts for you:
- Obviously, vote. In a largely Democratic city, it may feel like your vote doesn’t count this go-around, but that kind of thinking is honestly what got us on the brink of a Fascist hellscape. Vote for the sticker but please: Vote.
- You may have a couple of doubts as to who deserves your vote and this point may negate point number one but here it goes: Generally speaking, Democrats will do best in this city. Having said that, hey– it’s your vote. Use it as a form of protest.
- For instance, if you feel as though there should be term limits within certain positions, you can always write in someone whom you think would do a better job than candidates who are running unchallenged and uncontested–– and were not challenged AT ALL in the primary election.
- On the other hand, if an elected official keeps doing a great job, keep them in office.
- Yes, please vote YES on Initiative 86, a.k.a. the Foie Gras bill (cruelty most fowl?)
- On ranked-choice voting: Rank your favorite as ONE, rank your tolerable alternative as TWO and so on.
- And I know that it’s not part of the ballot this go-around but listen: the Bottle Bill MAKES SENSE. This is not some silly nonsense but a tried-and-true strategy that keeps cities cleaner and gives more value to things we have thought of as trash. And while we’re at it, Maryland and Virginia should join in on this effort because bottles from y’alls states pollute just as much as ours.
Cryptic enough for you? Need a couple of things spelled out? Drop me a line at info@thehillishome.com — I’ll try to reply. Try is the operating verb here.
By the way, Alex Koma does a particularly great job relaying the drama in some ANC races around the District in this piece over at The 51St. Remember, folks: ANC commissioners are your smallest unit of government in the District of Columbia AND THEY ARE UNPAID. It’s a tough office.
A conversion from a two-story office building to a nine-unit residential project along the 900 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE? Sounds like a dream, feels like a possibility. Urban Turf has more details.
A steakhouse on Barracks Row? Uh… groundbreaking? We thought those only cropped up on K Street NW, frankly, but it looks like Steve Salis of Federalist Pig wants to turn the old Cava Mezze building into Woodruff’s, a steakhouse for the Hill. I mean… I do love steak? Washington Business Journal
It seemed that Granville Moore’s was set to close on October 31 but PoPville extrapolates from the open reservation book and the recent outpouring of love that all may not be lost.
Urban Turf also takes a look at the developments in the works along the H Street Corridor. Spoiler alert: aside from the one in the 900 block of 3rd, they all seem a little, um, slow to start.
“Person of interest” in the Barracks Row hullaballoo Nathan Scott turned himself in last week. He was the guy who got the brawl started inside Cafe 8 which culminated in a National Guardsman getting shot. WUSA-9
Solid State Books on H Street has been battling some flooding and damage to their store. They have had to postpone some events and cancel some others. Check out their Instagram and show them some love, and make sure your activity is still on.
Capitol Square Bar is rebranding as an Argentinian barbecue place called District 7. As long as they don’t play Fox News all the time on their massive tvs, I’m okay with that. Hoodline
