Heads-Up: Maryland Avenue Work is Starting

A small section of the Maryland Avenue project map, via screenshot. Full map here.

In case you missed this, it’s official: Work is starting on Maryland Avenue, between 13th and 14th Streets NE, on Thursday, July 25. This is one of the first stages of work in the project, which officially broke ground back in late March of this year, but you’ll need to plan around it. You can learn more about the project from the official DDOT/Vision Zero website, marylandavesafety.org, as well as sign up for updates. You can also check out a page devoted to the Maryland Avenue streetscape here, which is not affiliated to DDOT but which has valuable information and maps. You can also look at an earlier, neighbor-generated, version of a page here, which has not been updated but which also shows that work was supposed to start a year ago. The following information comes from DDOT:

(Washington, DC) — As a part of the Maryland Avenue NE Streetscape Project, the District Department of Transportation will close the outbound and inbound lanes adjacent to the median between 13th and 14th Street NE on or about July 25, 2019. These lanes will be closed from 7:00 a.m. — 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday from July 25, 2019 through August 9, 2019, weather and construction conditions permitting. In addition, the parking lane between 13th and 14th Street NE, along the outbound lane, will be restricted to stage the work.

The lane closures are needed to lay the electrical conduit along the median between existing electrical manholes.

Traffic control signs will be in place to guide travelers in the corridor through the new traffic pattern.  Motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists are urged to stay alert and use caution when traveling by the work zone.

The Maryland Avenue NE project will improve safety and access for bikes, pedestrians, and cars on the corridor between 2nd Street and 14th Street NE. The project includes new lighting, traffic signals, high visibility crosswalks, traffic calming, shorter crossing distances for pedestrians and new bike lanes. DDOT anticipates the project will be complete by Summer 2021.
