Starling Montessori is going strong into its second year

We are so happy to provide a platform for a family-owned business like Starling Montessori. They started back in the fall of 2024 and, a year later, the school is expanding. There are many choices for daycare around our neighborhood, but I think you’ll agree with me that Starling is quite special. Almost makes me wish I still had little ones. Almost. Read on to learn more about them and how they have expanded since their inception. Answers have been lightly edited for clarity. ––María Helena Carey

Q: How has Starling Montessori grown?

A: We’re thrilled to be entering our second year

This fall, we began with full enrollment and a high retention rate from our returning families — a wonderful reflection of the trust and connection we’ve built. We’ve also expanded our toddler classroom capacity to 12 children, adding four new spots to welcome more curious, eager learners. Our mixed-age group now includes both returning older toddlers and several new younger children, creating a vibrant and balanced environment where kids can learn from each other and grow together.

We’ve welcomed a new teacher, a native Spanish speaker from Peru, who brings both Early Childhood Education training and a passion for language immersion. She uses only Spanish with the children, creating a rich bilingual experience through songs, stories, and interactive activities that make learning language natural, fun, and engaging.

We’ve also collaborated with other local small businesses, like City Sing and Play, to bring our children even richer learning experiences. On top of all this, we’ve worked hard to enhance our indoor and outdoor spaces, making them even more inviting, safe, and full of opportunities for exploration.

Looking ahead, we are planning for a future Primary classroom for children ages 3 to 6. While the timeline and space are still in development, we’re excited to imagine the next stage of growth and the opportunities it will bring for our students to continue their Montessori journey.

Q: How is Starling Montessori different from other schools?

A: Starling Montessori is a small, family-focused school, and relationships are at the heart of everything we do. Our students and families form close bonds, and it’s such a joy to see those connections grow. Our staff get to know each child deeply, forming strong, trusting relationships, and they’re also lifelong learners themselves, supported in professional development and eager to grow alongside the children.

We are also different because our growth is sustainable and intentional — our goal is to meet the needs of the families and community we serve, ensuring that each step forward supports the children, families, and staff we already have. In addition, we hope to pursue official Montessori accreditation within our first five years, which will strengthen our commitment to providing an authentic Montessori experience.

With small class sizes and a 1:4 ratio  and our Montessori-trained staff — we have created a nurturing and peaceful environment where every child can thrive at their own pace while learning to care for themselves and others.
