Hey there! Well, we made it to September, kiddos. What a harrowing ride this year has been. Speaking of harrowing, I am sharing a link to Uncharted Territories, an excellent Substack that talks about the intersection of history, culture and predicting the future. I hope you enjoy reading this post as much as I did.
Another must-read is Councilmember Charles Allen’s weekly update. Click here to learn more about how this occupation is hurting our businesses, as well as explaining some of the more draconian things that are potentially going to happen to DC over the next few weeks. Charles Allen Ward 6 Newsletter
National Public Radio takes a look at the false claims of President Trump, who mistakenly has asserted that now that the National Guard is in our neighborhoods against our will, people feel free to dine out again. Our small businesses are suffering. NPR
Incidentally, Rock Harper is rebranding Hill Prince on H Street. We can’t wait to see what he does with the space, as Hill Prince is probably one of the prettiest bars in town. When we walked by on Saturday, you could tell that a new mural is in the works around the façade– perhaps a tropical theme is upcoming? PoPville
Chicago– brace yourselves. The Chicago Tribune takes a look at the lessons to learn from our occupation. And hey, Ward 5 Councilmember Zachary Parker mentioned! ““It’s important for people to be clear-eyed about where we are in this moment in history,” said D.C. Councilmember Zachary Parker, who grew up in Chicago and graduated from Northwestern University. “This is bigger than D.C. It’s bigger than Chicago. This is about an attempt to step out of the bounds of democracy, to send the military and tanks to American cities. Some would say it’s un-American. I would argue it is unconstitutional.”” Chicago Tribune
Listen, the Mayor is sorry that so many of us are living in fear of arrest and harassment by multiple agencies but she is “very pro” this occupation. Honestly, Mayor Bowser, we’ve known you were super into this new status quo ever since you jumped at the chance of getting rid of Black Lives Matter Plaza before being asked. The rest of us aren’t nearly as on board with all this safety theater. Hill Rag and KGET
But sure, let’s have the troops pick up our trash. That sounds good. Make DC Beautiful Again (as if it had ever stopped). HuffPost
And some funny guy decided to try to grab a National Guardsman weapon at Capitol South Metro. Good going, guy. Raw Story
But then Rachel Maddow reported on our protests and this clip is so moving and life-affirming (FREE DC!!!) despite all the sadness that I’ve watched it several times this morning. MSNBC on YouTube
There were delays late last week along the Orange, Blue and Silver lines on account of smoke at Potomac Avenue Station. I was there maybe 10 minutes after it wrapped up on Friday and it was as if nothing had happened, but if you were late to work that day, now you know why. DC News Now
Fan of sailing? A local crew is sailing back into DC as part of the Round The World Yacht Race. Yay, non-invasion news! Events DC, because why not
