Photos: The Royal Sonesta on Capitol Hill

I recently was given a tour of the Royal Sonesta on Capitol Hill, located at 20 Massachusetts Avenue NW. You may have seen the gut job and construction at the building across from the National Postal Museum over the past few years, as the building underwent a transformation from government offices into the newest full-size luxury hotel in the area in 40 years (the last one was the Hilton just around the corner). Take a look! We think you’ll find it a great new addition to our neighborhood, in terms of staycations, places for extended family to stay, large events and a beautiful new restaurant, Bistro du Jour, for special lunches, celebrations, or when you need to be surrounded by beautiful décor. All photos by Maria Helena Carey.

The carriageway has plenty of space to avoid double-parking, very exciting.
And the lobby is gorgeous and airy, with clean northern light. A perfect place to pause or take in the art commissioned from local artists. The silvery things are clouds of cherry blossoms.
The artwork over the check-in area is inspired by Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s collar, for instance.
And the entry bears the Royal Sonesta’s slogan, “Long Live the Guest.” In the far distance, you can see the entrance to the restaurant.
It’s so beautiful! Like stepping into a garden, but indoors!
Look at that gorgeous telework. And if it’s anything like its namesake over at the Wharf, you can expect it to be classic, delicious French fare.
The Royal Sonesta will share the space with office space, so the first few floors will be suites and the top floors will house office space.
Here is an average suite and it’s ENORMOUS, at an average of over 400 square feet. It’s a room you can see yourself sharing with large teenagers without feeling like you’re sleeping on top of one another.
And the décor is cheeky and whimsical, featuring the Knight of Capitol Hill, an enterprising and distinguished beaver. We hope he lobbies for the continued health of our rivers.
This is the view from one of the suites. Hello, neighbors!
The event space is large and beautiful. All in all, it can accommodate up to 800 people.
And this is the same view, but from the top. Ah, home!
