The To Do List: Week of October 13, 2022

The leaves are turning and it feels properly fallsy (even if all the mosquitoes are still alive). What shall we do this week?

IMPORTANT: SPOOKY SEASON IS COMING! Here on the Hill, we love ourselves some Halloween. Hill-O-Ween is a proud and storied tradition for the littlest ones, and the date has been announced: Friday, October 28, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. There will be live and virtual events and plenty of happy, spooky merriment. For more info, visit their site here.

And if you want to be part of our now third annual Spooky Hill is Home map so folks can find your spoo0o0oO0okily decorated home, shoot us an email at info@thehillishome.com and make sure to tell us about your home’s theme and degree of spookiness! And don’t forget: if you have a special candy delivery system or treat, we can add that to the map as well!

This afternoon, join ANC commissioners Amber Gove and Laura Gentile for a Sidewalkpalooza! Learn how to use the 311 app and how to make specific requests so that our walking infrastructure can look better and less dangerous! And guess what? If you’re a teen this counts as community service.

After Sidewalkpalooza, linger at the park! At 6 p.m., enjoy an outdoor, Halloween-themed movie provided by the Metropolitan Police Department. We’re told it’ll be The Addams Family, but it’s subject to change. And mark your calendar, because on Friday, October 28, they are bringing a movie to Garfield park!

Feel more like laughing than PG-giggling? There is a comedy show at Audi field tonight, Seriously Funny Friday. For more info and tickets, click here.

On Saturday, October 15, from 2-6 p.m., go to Eastern Market Metro Park for Moe Democracy, an event featuring a DJ, fun for the kids and whole family, and more! The event is free but it’s always a good idea to register through Eventbrite just in case.

Looking for something nature-y? The Kingman Island Family Day is happening on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ride a boat, listen to stories, commune with nature and enjoy one of the best-kept secrets of the eastern part of the city. The event is free but you can RSVP here.

We’re also told that there will be an oompah band playing around Eastern Market Metro Plaza on Saturday, but don’t have enough details. But hey, that’s the kind of thing you hear before you see, right?

The St. Mark’s Players are back and their new production, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang will run from October 7 through 22. For more information and tickets click here.

The Congressional Cemetery Soul Strolls are a hot ticket, coming at you October 14, 15, 21 and 22. Learn about the residents of our quietest community and wander the beautiful grounds at night. Tickets are $15-35 and you can get them here, while you still can. (SOLD OUT!!! Better luck next year!!)

Get Brunch on the Go! Every Saturday in October, except the 29, get fit and brunch with friends! Four restaurants are offering special packages and you can find a routine to follow at the Yards’ website. On October 1, get fit and fab with Yellow (YUM!). More information here and tickets here.

Get tickets to The Till Trilogy at Mosaic Theater Company. This collection of three works focuses on the 1955 murder of Emmet Till, a 14-year old child who was tortured and killed for allegedly offending a white woman. Every Thursday, Kelly’s Irish Times has comedy! The Batting Cage Comedy show starts at 8 p.m. and is free. More info here.

Hey, have you gotten your COVID booster and your flu shot? No? Well, cross that off your list this weekend! Click here to find where you can get it. Just a heads-up: COVID centers have run out of flu shots, so you may have to hit up Grubb’s Pharmacy for that.

OFF-HILL

Just across the river from Kingman Park, the Frederick Douglass Family Day is happening at Anacostia park. There will be guided tours, children’s programming and more. For more information, click here.

Do you love DC History? Then mark your calendar for Saturday, October 15 so you can visit the Carnegie Library during Open Day! Explore the library and the neighborhood, dance, learn and get gift certificates to neighboring restaurants when you register. More information and RSVP here.

PLAN AHEAD

A new interactive experience is coming to Rhode Island Center, the space right off Rhode Island Avenue Metro, where the Van Gogh exhibit was earlier this year. The experience is called DINOS ALIVE and it looks like it’s gonna be a great hit for the younger set (and their tired, devoted parents). Dinos Alive is coming in October, but you can get tickets here.

Octoberfest is coming to Eastern Market Main Street on October 22. Taste all sorts of yummy libations and stroll down our lovely corridors. More details coming soon.

Did you know the Library of Congress is celebrating their 125th this November? We know– not a day over 124, and still as stately and fireproof as ever! There will be a very special Community Day coming on November 3, so stay tuned for more details!

Do you love the Hill Center’s Pottery on the Hill? Their first in-person show in two years is coming this November, and you’re invited! The show will open Friday, November 11 with a ticketed preview reception and sale and continues through Sunday, November 13 with free admission. There will also be a silent auction. Part of the proceeds will go toward supporting the Hill Center. Learn more about the event and get excited here.
