Ah, feel that extra buzz in the air and that fresh breeze on this… 90-degree day? Well, that’s Virgo energy for you and happy birthday to my fellow 12th of the zodiac! What’s going on this week?
First up, in case you didn’t know, today is the 208th anniversary of the Burning of Washington. Robert wrote a column about it a few years ago: read here.
Second, if you’re a parent, are you and your kiddos ready for school? If you haven’t received school communications yet or you’re new in town, check out DCPS Strong, the public schools’ portal for the start of school. By the way, make sure you vaccinate the children, as it seems we have a problem with non-compliance, as reported by WTOP.
And if you want to share first day of school photos with us, we are ready to see them on Instagram and Twitter, hankies on hand. Tag #thehillishome!
In public safety news, we’ve been hearing stories about a flasher. A neighbor recently shared a NextDoor post, warning about a man in a car asking for directions and, once he got them, masturbating for the person. This man has been seen around 11th and Maryland NE and is described as a Black man, thin build, with short, dark hair. PoPville recently shared a story about a flasher at Lincoln Park following a similar M.O. of asking questions to gain trust and then exposing himself.
In other public safety news ,on Saturday morning, an inebriated woman had to be rescued out of the Anacostia River, off Canal Street. She drove her car through a fence and it rolled over. We hope the driver is okay and that, if necessary, she gets the help that she needs. WTOP
Money Inc. ranked the best sushi restaurants in DC and we are absolutely thrilled to see that three of our favorites in the area made their list– especially beloved Sushi Hachi, right at number 2. Absent from that list are favorites, Ako and Kenaki inside the Roost, Sushi Capitol on Pennsylvania Avenue and Torai Sushi, just down the street from Sushi Hachi. We’re just going to say, huh.
It’s not regardless and it’s not irrespective: It’s Irregardless, and it’s coming to the former Le Grenier space in late summer, per PoPville. Looking forward to seeing another bistro hopefully thriving in this space.
Call Your Mother Deli recently announced they will be doing catering and you can order here. You can even set up recurring events! Get ready to have better lunches at the office and pretty much just about anywhere else. CYM’s whitefish salad is quite possibly the best in town, and I am willing to die on that delicious hill.

Have you seen this new apartment building on 15th Street NE, finished in 2021? Architect Magazine recently highlighted the project, a fascinating mix of existing details and modern accents.

The new office space at the Wharf is looking gorgeous. Bisnow has more details about the construction, in addition to information about vacancies and other interesting details.
Hey, our ears are burning! South Africa’s The Citizen took time to write a lovely column about DC, and many of our beloved spots caught their eye– of course!
