Neighbors in the 1300 block of E Street SE want to stop DoorDash from opening a DashMart in the former Frager’s temporary space and they are coming together to make their voices heard.
As you may recall, Frager’s used the temporary space from about 2013 until they moved to their new old home on 11th and Pennsylvania in 2019. Ever since DoorDash has increased activity in the area, trucks have been blocking the streets and alleyways, snarling traffic and creating a nuisance for neighbors around the area.
The area has been developed heavily over the past two years and the character has changed: Developments such as Beckert’s Park, The Lockwood, Watkins Alley have brought hundreds of new families to the area and making a shift for this block in particular from partly industrial –thanks in part to the DDOT Transportation Operations Administration headquartered in that same block– to markedly residential. Additionally, Watkins Elementary is one block to the west.
ANC 6B voted recently to appeal DoorDash’s permit, per Capitol Hill Corner, but the neighbors are coalescing and have started a Change.org petition. If you’re a neighbor in Hill East, consider signing the petition. You can also join a private Facebook group, Concerned Neighbors Against DashMart where people who are affected by this addition to the neighborhood can connect and talk strategy. If you want to be added to the group, email Allison Cunningham at arecunningham@gmail.com.
