Hill Buzz

Yes, the Hill Buzz is late today, but it’s for good reason– I’ve been yakking it up on Twitter, talking about interesting takes on what gentrification looks like, and taking your The Hill Is Home logo mug orders and delivering some around the neighborhood! Want a mug? Send me an email at info@thehillishome.com and I’ll get you one and deliver it to your home if you’re in the neighborhood. I can ship for an additional fee 🙂

Hey, it’s THIH on Instagram! Do you follow?

If you’ve been watching the Democratic National Convention, you may have noticed there are some neighbors on the screen. Washingtonian breaks down night one.

Seldom do we get to link to the Oprah magazine on here, but hey– Mayor Bowser is featured and, no matter whether you like her or not, it’s a proud moment to see her recognized on the pages of a leading national magazine. It’s also great to see how balanced the article is, even including Black Lives Matter organizer April Goggans‘ opinion on the Mayor’s Black Lives Matter plaza gesture: “She has done everything to discredit, disrespect or ignore us until George Floyd was murdered.”

Want to do good, feel good and help a child feel cared for and set up for success as they start a new year of school? Why not donate a digital device, a hot spot, or a whole backpack? Serve Your City’s Back To School Bash is still going strong and your neighbors need your help. Click here to learn more and read a recent WTOP article on the effort. I would also like to thank Serve Your City for resisting the use of the number 2 instead of the word “to.” It’s the little things. #WeKeepUsSafe

How does streetwear designer and philanthropist Chris Cardi spend a perfect day in DC? He would kick things off having breakfast at Tony’s …. Place. Agree to disagree but Tony’s Breakfast is the one that wins my heart, Chris. Washington Post

Several brick buildings in the Navy Yard are being reconstructed and the Federal News Network has an article that will make history, architecture and military history buffs happy, or at least curious. Go take a look.

Even if you don’t want to receive his emails, Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen and his staff work hard to make his updates available to all. You can find his latest up on his site, here. It covers the census — which, if you have not filled out, GET TO IT!— as well as voting and the DCPS technology survey.

A little plea: The United States Census Bureau works tirelessly every day– not just on a census year– to provide a fair, accurate and informed look at who lives in America, for the good of the people themselves. The data that you share with the census is completely confidential: This means your identity and data are protected and only used in the most ethical of ways, to ensure that the country serves the people and not the other way around. It’s such an important aspect of the country, it’s directed by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution. Please, please, please: Fill out the Census, and if you have people who work in your home or at your business, make sure they fill it out too. It’s vital.

DCist dedicates some pixels to Fight Club, the sandwich re-brand from the Beuchert’s Saloon team. The sandwich joint opened today– have you tried them?

And speaking of pivots, Hamilton Johnson, who replaced Kevin Tien as the chef at Emilie’s for a few weeks, is no longer at the restaurant. Eater‘s Gabe Hiatt states that he left the restaurant after less than two months, but chef Johnson told me via Instagram DM that he was laid off. He said that although he was excited to be at Emilie’s, there were “no sales.” The way in which Tien departed Emilie’s also hurt the restaurant. “There was a lot of opportunity to do great things… it’s very unfortunate.” Wishing him the best and hoping to taste his cooking at another Hill restaurant soon. I also reached out to Emilie’s via DM and they stated that they are still looking for someone to helm the kitchen and hope to count on community support.

Arvel Wills, 31, was killed near 5th and I Northeast. I’m not saying this isn’t relatively close to Union Station, and I should probably not be nitpicking location on a note about yet another DC resident killed violently but…. 5th and I NE is more H Street corridor than Union Station. Just saying. Washington Post

If you follow me on Twitter, you know there is a lot of discussion, polls, and occasional livetweeting of mayoral press conferences. This week’s poll centered around the fact that, for many of you, the mail is just not being delivered. Granted, some areas of the Hill have had their problems, but not of this magnitude. However, some of you are having the best service of your lives, and hey… good for you.

Last week, I asked you if you knew what an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner, or ANC, was, and the results were… okay. Readers did not fare as well when it came to Single Member Districts, or SMDs. Considering this is an election year, click on the name links so you can read up (and DO NOT look up SMD on Urban Dictionary). And if you’re running for ANC, send me your candidate statements to info@thehillishome.com. I will start to put them up the last week of August. Results are below:

More than half of Twitter readers seem to know what an ANC is. Yay, readers! Imma respectfully ask that the 13% who didn’t know join the 4% who googled it, or click here.
Some of you looked SMD up on Urban Dictionary– 43.5% of you, to be exact. Oh, readers.

Incidentally, if you want to know your Single Member District, this handy dandy website helps you know. So does this lovely wovely map. Ah, technology!

Don’t get too attached– redistricting cometh, and right soon. SO FILL OUT THE CENSUS ALREADY.
