Nancy B. Smalley passed away on May 2, 2020. Nancy was born and raised in New Jersey by her mother and stepfather. She was an only child. Nancy moved to Washington, D.C., and worked in graphic design. She lived on South Carolina Avenue, SE, starting in the early 1990s. While living there, she met and married her late husband, Harold A. Smalley
Nancy was an eccentric, warm woman. From her blue-toned eyeshadow to her unique earrings and bangles, Nancy had an appreciation for art and design. A frequent patron of the Pretzel Bakery, she was quick to offer a sweet hello and sit and chat while enjoying an iced mocha. She befriended many, especially young children, who were drawn to her friendliness and sense of fashion. Nancy was especially passionate about animals: Her testimony at DC City Council in the late 1990s helped result in the passage of current animal protection laws in the city
Nancy had no children of her own, but her friends and neighbors from the Hill East neighborhood will miss her dearly.
