To Do: Weekend of September 19th-22nd

H Street Festival is Saturday

Whether or not you herald the arrival of fall with a wild embrace of all things pumpkin spice or if you plan to flip flop your summer style until first frost, we can all agree that it is past time for the mosquitoes to make their exit.

Since that won’t be happening for a while, you might distract yourself with one of these suggestions.

Tonight is the final Eastern Market Main Street Third Thursday of the season. The C Street plaza will come to life with games, Pilates classes and more. The festivities are free and begin at 4 p.m.

Friday, the Riot Grrls of Taffety Punk Theatre Company are back at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop with an all-female cast of Othello. IMHO there’s no better villain than Iago (though Othello is so easily convinced) and I look forward to watching their interpretation of the tragedy. Friday is a Pay What You Can performance and the show will run through October 12.

Saturday is the annual H Street Festival. DC’s largest street fair gets even bigger this year. The festivities will extend allll the way to 3rd street. Come prepared to walk. And eat. Maybe dance? Sponsored by many business large and small but glaringly neither Whole Foods nor Starbucks. There will be multiple stages along the corridor. My favorite event last year was the DJ truck at 6th and H. Honestly let’s just close the street to cars so we can dance in the street every day.

The Wharf hosts the Wiener 500 Oktoberfest Saturday afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m. Little dachshunds will race each other for glory but all breeds are invited to enter a best dressed contest. Humans can compete in a stein hoisting contest. There will pet vendors on hand and food and beverage available. The event is free and all ages are welcome.

Sunday at 2 p.m., kids can learn to make challah for Rosh Hashanah at the Hill Center. This round of the Kid’s Bake off will teach kids the basics of the fluffy bread and then they are free to top it however they want. Tickets are $10 for an individual and $25 for a family.
