Scared of Cemeteries? Run fast through Congressional Cemetery Saturday

I can’t tell you how often I ramble to non-DCers about the wonderful oddity that is the Historical Congressional Cemetery. Well, head over there this Saturday evening and see it up close at Dead Man’s Run when athletic and freaky ghouls sprint and saunter amidst the rolling hills of the 35-acre National Historic Landmark. Or, even better, you can register and be assured your entry fee goes to programs to preserve the historic property.

Here’s what you need to know:

The Basics: The 5k begins at 6 p.m. near the east end of the cemetery. The kids run begins shortly after, at around 6:05 p.m.

Cost: $40 for the 5k, $10 for the untimed kids run (distance is a little under 1/2 a mile; t-shirts do not come with kids run entry).

Packet Pickup: Packet pickup is race day only, and begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Chapel (inside the Cemetery).

Bag check: Bags may be left inside the Chapel during the race until 7 p.m., and a volunteer will oversee them during this time.

The Perks: Each 5k race entry comes a Dead Man’s Run race t-shirt (guaranteed for those registering by August 31st) and a ticket which is redeemable for one free beer, thanks to our generous sponsor Fulcrum Properties (additional beers will be for sale). Also comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! (Aaaah!)

The Course: Our 5k course is flat, fast, and USATF certified. Start and finish are within the cemetery, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. Water is available at the start/finish line and at a water stop around the halfway point of the 5k course.

Awards: Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers overall, as well as the top team.

Remember to dress in your best! Awards will be given to the top three individual costumes and the top team costume. Plan ahead!
