We periodically share updates from your ANC commissioners, edited for brevity and clarity. Although these are most pertinent to particular single member districts (SMDs), we feel the information shared can be of interest to the whole Capitol Hill community. Just a heads up about a couple safety improvements coming to our streets in the days and weeks ahead.
Last week, DDOT installed three speed humps along the 400 and 600 blocks 10th St NE in response to a request from ANC6A for traffic calming on the street. No parking signs have already been posted for the installation. We have also requested raised crosswalks and I believe DDOT is still reviewing adding one at 10th & G St NE.
In the coming weeks, DDOT will install curb bump outs along the cross walk where 8th St NE intersects with D St NE. ANC6A and Councilmember Allen pushed hard for conversion of the intersection to an All-Way Stop, so that 8th St traffic would stop to allow for safe crossing at D. Unfortunately, DDOT’s multiple studies came back against that requested option. Hopefully, the bump outs will help encourage safer crossing for cars, pedestrians and cyclists alike. Commissioner Mike Soderman and I will continue to monitor and to push for conversion to an All-Way stop if not.
If you would like to add traffic calming to your block, please complete a Traffic Calming investigation request form and bring it to the attention of your ANC Commissioner and to the ANC’s Transportation Committee, so that we may assist in prioritizing the requests.
