For those of you who remember The Jetsons, can you believe we don’t have flying cars yet? Forget driverless cars, my kid-of-the-70s imagination was sure we’d be taking to the air to get to work each day. Sigh.

There are miles to go on truly diversifying our commuter routes, but the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is dreaming big too, and they’re putting money on it with their Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP).

Approximately $1.2 million in funding is available through TAP, a federal program that provides funding to projects considered “alternative” to traditional highway construction. Applications will be accepted through August 15, 2018.

The funds will be distributed through a citywide competitive process for qualifying, non-traditional projects. Each proposed project must meet the following criteria:

  • Relate to surface transportation;
  • Qualify under one of the several eligible activities geared towards bicycle and pedestrian activities, community improvements, environmental mitigation, as well as recreational trails; and,
  • Further the mission, initiative, and plans of District agencies (e.g. MOVE DC and Sustainable DC.)

Eligible project sponsors include local governments, regional transportation authorities, transit agencies, natural resource or public land agencies, school districts and agencies, tribal governments and other appropriate local or regional governmental entities.

The FAST Act also allows nonprofit entities responsible for the administration of local transportation safety programs to apply. Nonprofits are eligible to partner with any eligible entity on an eligible TAP project, if state or local requirements permit.

Online applications, details about eligible activities, sponsors, and further submission information is available here.
