Set Your Alarm: Capitol Hill Clean-Up TOMORROW!

Happy volunteers at the first Capitol Hill Clean-Up. Join them every first Saturday! Photo courtesy of the clean-up organizers.

On Saturday, April 7, several Hill East neighbors with support from nine local businesses and organizations launched a monthly cleanup effort around Capitol Hill. These efforts were already underway with support from 7-Eleven, and last month, they were ramped up with help from The Pretzel Bakery, Fulcrum Properties Group, Congressional Cemetery, Trusty’s, Frager’s Hardware, Sundance Contracting, Anacostia Watershed Society and The Capital Candy Jar. The neighbors were also joined by Councilman Charles Allen’s office and several ANC6B Commissioners and their families. The event took place again on Saturday, May 5, with even more community support.

Litter has long been an issue in Hill East, and it was very encouraging to see so many neighbors lend a hand during the past two months in recognition of Earth Month and with the hope that this monthly cleanup will continue long into the future. Over 70 volunteers showed up to help pick up trash across our several Hill East pickup locations, and we hope that momentum will continue into our next cleanup this Saturday, June 2.

Volunteers can pick up trash bags and gloves anytime after 9 a.m. at The Pretzel Bakery, 7-Eleven, Trusty’s, Capital Candy Jar and Congressional Cemetery and should return their filled bags to any of those locations. In April there was a big launch gathering with several speeches recognizing the occasion, but going forward, we’re just asking volunteers to report to their closest location rather than all meeting up as a big group. After you return your bags, ask about specials and discounts for volunteers at The Pretzel Bakery, 7-Eleven, Trusty’s and Capital Candy Jar. We hope to see many of you out this Saturday and beyond! To RSVP (for headcount purposes only), you can email cleancaphill@gmail.com.
