Trash pickup can be confusing. We’ve recently gone from recycling in the front and trash in the alley but thanks to the excessive E Street SE construction mania (Not), we now need to put both on the curb. So, either around 8 p.m. or 7 a.m. we hear the bump, bump, bump of trash cans being pulled around front. The alternative is to have four smelly trashcans in our front yard. Lovely.
Well, with the DC’s OPPRESSIVE heat in mind, trash and recycling crews from the Department of Public Works (DPW) will be starting their daily collection routes one hour earlier at 6 a.m., beginning Tuesday, July 3. The earlier collection time will remain in effect for the entire summer, ending Monday, September 3. Don’t forget: There is NO pickup next Wednesday, July 4, and the weekly schedule will roll forward.
We’re all for the crews starting their work a little earlier in the day when it’s cooler. Plus, those trucks get stinky — and surely they become stinkier as the cans ‘marinate.’
To make sure trash and recycling are out for pick-up at the earlier time, DPW’s customers can put their items out starting at 6:30 p.m. the day before their collections are to be made. Trash and recycling containers should be removed from public space by 8 p.m. on the collection day or a sanitation citation may be issued.
You don’t want one of those!
