We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home. These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.
ANTHONY BROWN is running for the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6E 02 seat being vacated by five-term Commissioner Kevin Chapple. Commissioner Chapple has endorsed my candidacy to fill his vacancy.
I am a native Washingtonian and lifetime resident, having lived on Wards 2, 5, 8 and now 6. I was educated, worked and have worshipped in the District of Columbia all my life.
I am a product of the DC Public Schools, a graduate of Frank W. Ballou Senior High School and Washington Technical Institute, a predecessor of today’s University of the District of Columbia. Both of my children are graduates of DCPS (Eastern and Benjamin Banneker High Schools).
My professional and public service background includes working for the federal government for over 38 years. I am a certified mediator and human resources professional, retired from the US Department of State.
I am a member of Bible Way Church, and serve as an officer of two church committees.
I am a Shaw homeowner and currently serve on the ANC 6E Zoning and Planning Committee and Alcoholic Beverage Control Licensing Committee.
Important Issues are of interests to me
Managing New Development: Reducing negative impacts on neighbors.
Commercial Development: Attracting the types of businesses residents want.
Parking: Protecting residents’ ability to park close to home.
A Safer and Cleaner Shaw: Better community policing and street cleaning.
Why I want to run
Having lived in the District of Columbia all of my life, I have witnessed the city’s slow rise from the devastation of the 1968 riots. I have seen our school system begin its much needed turnaround. I have seen city services improve dramatically and become more reliable. I have seen businesses return to Shaw after decades of residents having to spend their dollars elsewhere. I have seen streets and sidewalks replaced after decades of neglect. I have seen long-boarded up homes and storefronts restored to productive use. I have seen crack houses and shooting galleries become homes again. But unintended negative impacts have also resulted, like parking challenges, rat infestation, and increases in burglaries and crime. I want to be part of solving the challenges to quality of life that will make our neighborhood one of the best places in Washington, DC to live, work, shop, play, pray and learn. I want to make sure our neighborhood gets its fair share of the services our tax dollars pay for.
Why people should vote for me
Residents should vote for me because of my awareness of the current issues and service needs and familiarity with the District government and nonprofit resources services that can address the concerns of Shaw and ANC 6E residents. As a retiree, I can dedicate the time necessary to pursuing the goals my constituents establish for our neighborhood’s future.
How to reach me
I can be reached by either, email: BrownANC6E@gmail.com or call (202) 399-8090 with your neighborhood concerns, goals and ideas.
