According to the Hill Rag, a rumor about plans for auctioning off Frager’s contents –which was started on the Moms on the Hill list serve– is false.

In the article, Frager’s owner John Weintraub stated that Frager’s is not auctioning off its contents, nor will it go away after 96 years of continuous service. (That sound just now is a collective sigh of relief) It would seem a little weird to auction off the store, considering that Frager’s has been operating successfully out of 1317 E Street SE and 1230 Pennsylvania Avenue SE for the past couple of years. After the June 5, 2013 fire, the first order of business for the entire community was to get the beloved hardware store back up and running as soon as possible: This successful effort started at the space bound by  7th and 8th Streets SE, between C and Pennsylvania. That space formerly housed Eastern Market’s vendors right after the 2007 fire, as many of you may recall.

Kirsten Oldenburg, ANC 6B04’s commissioner –who oversees the area of the Hill where the Frager’s property is located– sent an email to her constituents addressing the rumor. She also shared the results from the Historic Preservation Review Board meeting from April 28, where the plans submitted by Perseus Realty and Hickok Cole were found to be compatible with the Historic District. They have recommended for the plans to go forward. You can read the report from that meeting by clicking here. If you want to learn more about the current plans, you can go to Kirsten’s site and see photos, plans, and Perseus’s presentation from February of this year. It’s all very exciting, and we cannot wait to see Frager’s come back (and hopefully with all its historic details in place)
