Do you feel that? Spring fever is in the air: it’s that time when everyone is SO DONE with being cooped up in the house after that ridiculous SNOW IN APRIL, the kids are almost finished with school, and summer couldn’t get here sooner. Spring fever might be best characterized by that sudden, inexplicable urge we all feel to just get out, enjoy, and create!

But before you schlep all the way to Dupont (or *gasp* outside the city limits), kids in tow, to put this newfound creative energy to good use, you should know about one of DC’s best spaces to get creative, right in your own backyard.

The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW), located just two blocks from the Eastern Market Metro at 545 7th St SE, is a true gem right in the heart of DC. A neighborhood favorite for paint & sip nights and arts classes for all ages, CHAW’s quirky curb appeal beckons you in from the street.

The space is abuzz with a creative energy that’s nearly tangible. Music from strings and piano cascades gracefully from a second story practice room. Kids and adults alike spin ceramics in the basement studio. And a creak in the antique love-worn floorboards may indicate a dance rehearsal in progress, ranging from precious four- and five-year-olds in their ballet best to adult tap and jazz ensembles. Friday nights at CHAW can mean a pop-up figure drawing class for artists of all skill levels, or if you finally want to learn how to make the Pinterest-worthy scarf of your dreams, yep, there are classes for that, too. CHAW is also home to its own black box theater with a rotation of local performances, and one of the only public photography darkrooms in DC.

“Classes at CHAW offer so much more than painting a picture or dancing on stage,” says Jill Strachan, CHAW’s executive director. “They’re really about the confidence students will gain and carry throughout life, the connections they’ll make within the community, and finding their creative side.”

Let CHAW help you and your family channel your creative energy into an experience that’s genuinely fun, and leaves you feeling an incredible sense of accomplishment. Check out their adorable new video proving that art sparks great things.

Take that, spring fever.
