It’s been great to have a shiny new 11th Street bridge complex, connecting Wards 6 and 8 and deftly rearranging traffic on 295 and 695. But there is much work to be done to properly bridge the city: there are emotional and cultural scars that divide us more than unite us. Last night’s Bridge Park Mural reception at THEARC, 1901 Mississippi Avenue SE, proved that art is what brings us together and speaks to us most directly. Over the span of two weeks, local kids from Capitol HIll’s Cesar Chavez PCS and ArtReach painted a beautiful, bold, captivating 55-foot mural of their city. You can watch the making-of video by clicking here, or you can go see the mural, which will be on display at THEARC through September 30.

One of the artists, a Chavez PCS student who spoke during the reception, said it best: “It’s a shame not to know so many wonderful people, just because you’re divided by a river.”

Check out more photos of the reception over at Congress Heights on the Rise.
