Happy Birthday Shakespeare! The Folger celebrated last weekend but today is the day we think the Bard was born (and died, some years later) so celebrate by reciting a sonnet, drink some sack and try not to bite your thumb at anyone on the street.

Tonight the Atlas welcomes Sin Frontera, an Afro-Cuban group front by Ernesto “Gato” Gattell who recently emigrated to the U.S. as an Artist of Extraordinary Ability. The evening begins in the lobby as Jim Thompson, local world music expert and promoter, spins Word and Latin music to start the evening out. The show begins at 8pm and tickets are $22 – $28.
Friday morning start your day by sharing your concerns with our Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen. His Hill East Community Office Hours will be held at Curbside Cafe 257 15th St SE from 8am to 9:30am. And remember, these hours are not just for griping, they like to hear good news too!
The first Truckeroo of the season will be held at the Fairgrounds Friday afternoon. If you have never been expect lots of trucks, beer, cornhole and live music all day. The monthly event goes from 11am until 11pm.
Friday night is Hip Hop Happy Hour at East Side Yoga. First you do 75 minutes of vinyasa yoga and then you hang out with your fellow neighbors and yogis while sipping alcoholic and non-alcoholic treats. The class begins at 6:30pm and you can register in advance here.
Saturday is the Annual Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival. In just five years the festival has become the largest all-local music festival in the area. If you have never been to the funky island accessible via the RFK parking lot it is a must. The festival features bluegrass and roots music favorite while supporting the restoration of Kingman Island and the Anacostia River. Tickets are $20 and they will likely sell out. This is a family-friendly event and admission is free for those under 15. More information and tickets are available here.
Sunday afternoon at 3pm Hip Hop meets the music of Brazil with the latest installment of Christylez Bacon’s Washington Sound Machine. This time the Grammy-nominated Progressive hip hop artist collaborates with Brazilian vocalist Cizza Paz. You can watch a little of their work earlier this year in Brasilia here. The concert will be preceded at 2pm by a dance workshop. These concerts tend to sell out so get your tickets here asap.
