Barracks Row is getting its own yoga studio – Be Here Now Yoga. The studio, opening Feb. 15 in the former “The Family Room” space (411 8th St. S.E.), will offer meditation and yoga classes, as well as wellness and healing services for the whole family.
The space is large enough for two studios, which will house yoga classes of all levels, meditation classes, Thai Yoga Therapy, Reiki, Yogic Life Coaching, Yoga Therapy and other healing programs. For students and parents seeking to incorporate yoga into their daily lives, Be Here Now Yoga will offer before- and after-school classes and tutoring services.
“Our big dream is to open a charter school with BHNY’s profits,” said Sherri Ta, the studio’s owner. “We want to create a school that allows children to formulate their own learning and practice yoga and mindfulness throughout their day. I already have two staff members working on fulfilling this dream.”
Sherri, a former elementary school teacher, found yoga on her search for something non-material missing from her life. She purchased a DVD and started practicing in 2008, when yoga studios weren’t yet on every corner. From there she studied in the U.S. and India, and pursued her masters in counseling.
“This helped me continue to understand that I was meant to do more. I was meant to create a space for a community to grow as I had,” said Sherri.
Sherri thinks Capitol Hill is one of “the most intense places in the city,” and was surprised that the area wasn’t already saturated with yoga studios. She’s hoping to provide a place for Hill residents to come, relax and learn how to de-stress from their fast-paced lives.
We must really be stressed out Capitol Hill, as Sherri’s studio is one of two opening this month and adds to the other great yoga studio options available on the Hill!
