Holiday Gift Guide: Bike Commuters and Cargo Holders

The Yepp Maxi Seat

The Yepp Maxi Seat

Are you a full-time biking family or are you new to cycling from the Hill to the office? The following gift guide will help you find the perfect thing for the novice bike rider or full-time commuter in your family.

It’s no surprise that you are seeing more and more longtail bikes on the streets of Capitol Hill. They are awesome for commuting kids and cargo from New Hill East to the Capitol grounds and everywhere in between. The perfect spot for scoring a longtail or cargo bike is The Daily Rider on H Street. There, you’ll find the super trendy Yuba, along with other styles perfect for getting you, your gear and your kids where you need to be.

The Daily Rider also carries the very popular—and lightweight—Yepp child seat. I was able to test the Yepp front and rear seats earlier this fall and it is by far the best bike seat I’ve used. The seats are lightweight, they carry children from ages nine months to six years, and they are made of a very durable material that is waterproof and insulating. (Think Crocs, but way cooler and for your bike!) Want to make sure you have room for your panniers? Be sure to get the XL rear rack. While the seat is easy on-and-off, the basic rack for the rear seat is too small to attach panniers. An easily rectifiable alternative to the only complaint I had when using the Yepp.

Round out your visit to The Daily Rider by stocking up on accessories perfect for bikes and Christmas stockings! The store carries helmets for kids and adults alike, along with some of the coolest bike baskets you’ll ever see. But, by far, the best stocking stuffer for your bike commuter: An ankle strap or cuff that will keep the grease off of your favorite trousers.

When it comes to lights, tires and other essentials for your bike, Capitol Hill Bikes has everything you need. No need to log on or drive across the river, get everything you need at this store on Barracks Row.

Capitol Hill Bikes also has alternatives to the traditional child bike seat, including trail-a-bikes and bike trailers. Capitol Hill Bikes also offers some of the coolest cargo options available: the Burley Flatbed and Travoy—the perfect non-permanent cargo transportation options. Before you leave the store or check out online (you can order these items on their website linked above), be sure to get locks to secure your gifts. It’s better to be safe than sorry. It’s also best to discourage any shaking of packages under the tree that are filled with bike locks!
