This Week Four Years Ago on THIH

Four years may feel like light-years away in the life of a blog. Sometimes, when we look back in this column, it’s a marvel to see just how many things have changed in the neighborhood. This week is one of those weeks.

Four years ago, we covered a meeting of neighborhood businesses and stakeholders hosted by the Capitol Hill Riverfront BID and the Washington, DC Economic Partnership. Anticipation was quickly building about the city’s largest redevelopment initiative at the time, and now known as Yards Park, Canal Park and the rest of the Southeast hot spots. These projects have become an integral part of my life. What would I do without the M Street hub?

Also, reading Hill Buzz provides a “wow, four years was a long time ago”-moment. Claudia shared news about the imminent arrival of Biergarten Haus on H Street and news of the official closure of the movie theater in Union Station. It feels like the National Community Church, who used the Union Station theater for their services for 13 years, has been a fixture of Barracks Row for quite some time.

Speaking of Barrack Row, we also were counting the days for some now old-timers to open their doors on 8th Street. Ted’s Bulletin, Zest, and Chesapeake Room were a mirage four years ago.
