To Do

What is social media for if not to make our friends jealous with our pictures of our painted toes against an ocean backdrop; or  jealous of us in front of something awesome or just a rustic table laden with wine glasses and lobster. So after looking at everyone else having a fun summer, we are finally getting out of Dodge today and I almost forgot to do this.. This will be short and sweet, folks.

Tonight. Get your grits on and learn to cook amazing traditional southern food with Chef Kermit. The Hill Center hosts this one-time class from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Participants will  learn to prepare Low Country Shrimp and Grits and Carolina Lump Blue Crabcakes with Charleston Red Rice. White wine will also be served. The class costs $45 and you can learn more about Chef Kermit and register here.

Friday catch a silent movie at the Library of Congress. The feature is Paths to Paradise from 1925.  I have never even heard of this one so here is the LOC description: Perhaps the most overlooked silent comedy classic of the 1920s, this clockwork-timed crook comedy presents Raymond Griffith in all his smarmy elegance with co-star Betty Compson as rival jewels thieves who form an alliance to steal a valuable necklace. Ben Model will provide live musical accompaniment. The films are free but you must make a reservation here.

Saturday night they are showing the Bill Murray classic MEATBALLS! (This makes me a teensy bit sad that I will be away so go and watch it for me. I never went to summer camp so I assume this is an accurate depiction.)

Saturday  the Fridge is presenting a concert featuring Locke Kaushal, Beyond Modern and DDm,three hip hop greats coming out of the DMV today – rising star Locke Kaushal (LISTEN) plus DC’s famed duo Beyond Modern (LISTEN) and headliner DDm (LISTEN) from Baltimore. Tickets $10. Purchase in advance online or at the door. Artist bios may be found at the purchase tickets link. Doors open at 7pm.

Sunday. Did The DJs inspire you to spin yourself? Go back to the Fridge and  and learn the DJ Fundamentals. You will learn about the DJ styles of yesterday and today. Compare traditional turntable techniques with the software-based methodology used by contemporary DJs. DJ instructor to be announced. 1pm -3pm.

Note that the movies at the Library of Congress are not at the main Library in Washington, DC.
The movies are at the Packard Campus in Culpepper, VA.
