Meet the Candidate: Nichole Opkins, ANC 6B06

We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home.  These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.

1)    What issues are most important to you?

I’m most concerned about the issues that affect everyone in our community on a daily basis. By concentrating on a few key areas – public safety, neighborhood upkeep, education, and sustainable and mindful development – we can enrich the lives of the families in ANC 6B06. Most importantly, I want to empower all of our citizens to take an active role in our community. By working together, we can create a neighborhood that generations of families will be proud to call home. I support a coordinated security effort between neighborhood safety advocates and the Metropolitan Police Department to keep our streets safe; interesting programs and community events to keep neighborhood residents of all ages informed and connected; and community-based volunteer efforts to keep our sidewalks beautiful. As ANC Commissioner, I would be proud to bring these constructive measures to our neighborhood.

2)     Why you want to run?

As a native Washingtonian, and now resident of The Hill, I believe that it is my civic duty to get involved. Prior to getting on the November ballot, I attempted to attend meetings in our neighborhood and realized that, besides the PSA 108 meeting held by MPD, there were no regularly-scheduled community meetings. I visited a few larger ANC meetings and saw that, to my disappointment, the issues most important to our neighbors were not being addressed. Those experiences compelled me to run for office and be a voice for my community.

I feel that the members of the ANC 6B06 community deserve a representative who will vigorously promote their interests and concerns. This diverse neighborhood needs someone who will pay close attention to how we are being represented. We need someone who will ensure that concerns are addressed at the ANC level and beyond. I will be an active, attentive, and reliable ANC Commissioner.

3)   Why people should vote for you?

A vote for me is a vote for this community. I will be an accessible and responsive ANC Commissioner who is always available to answer questions and help address the concerns of my neighbors. I am a proud member of the Hill East neighborhood and I am connected to the everyday happenings here and understand our community’s strengths and growth areas. My family and I shop, eat, and spend our leisure time here; I’m a proud supporter of local businesses and organizations, including Moms on the Hill, the Hill Center, Barracks Row, and Capitol Hill Yoga. As an ANC Commissioner, I look forward to contributing to this neighborhood and ensuring its continued growth and vitality.

I am a mother, wife, attorney, and native Washingtonian. I am the daughter of a U.S. Marshall, granddaughter of a Metropolitan Police Lieutenant, and niece of several MPD and Capitol Police Sergeants.  My family and I have lived on the 500 block of 14th Street SE since 2007. I am on the planning committee for the MOTH Family Fest and regularly volunteer with the 13th Street Community Park & Garden Club.
