The DC Department of Public Works accepts old electronics and other hazardous materials on the first Thursday and Saturday of every month at the Fort Totten transfer station.  While it may not be as convenient as curbside pick up, it does divert very harmful chemicals and heavy metals from our waste stream and landfills, which means less of a risk of leaching into our water supplies and soils.

Just what can you bring over for the special collection, you ask?  DC DPW has a website with an extensive list of what can and cannot be collected.   Generally speaking if you have leftover household cleaners of coatings that smell when you open the container, it’s something that should not put put down your drain but should instead be brought to the transfer station (think stains, primers and antifreeze).  Electronics accepted include computers, televisions, VCRs (do you still have one?) and cell phones.  Fluorescent bulbs and any device containing mercury will also be accepted.

More information and a list of dates for the special collection days at Fort Totten are found on the DPW website.
