Get the Scoop on the Hippest Part of the Neighborhood

Originally uploaded to flickr by dctim1.

I learned something surprising about myself when I moved to what was a moderately shady intersection of NE in 2001 — I like things to be surprising and a little edgy.  So as H Street has developed, with its burlesque dancers, intimate music venues and wide variety of ethnic and theme restaurants, I’ve been rewarded mightily.  Now, though, between everything going on in NoMa, H Street, Florida Avenue and Bladesburg/Trinidad, I cannot keep up with all the development activity.

That’s where CHAMPS – Captitol Hill’s Chamber of Commerce comes in.  This coming Tuesday, May 8th, 7pm at the Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H Street, NE), CHAMPS is sponsoring an overview of real estate development projects planned and in progress in Northeast, from East Capitol north towards Gallaudet and NoMa.  Councilmember Wells will be there also to talk about his vision for the area, along with representatives from the NoMA BID, H Street Main Street and local real estate attorneys with Greenstein Delorme & Luchs.

This is a perfect event if you’re new to the neighborhood and want to get the scoop on what’s to come.  Or, if you’ve been around for a while like me and have gotten so into the weeds on this stuff that you’ve forgotten what the big ideas are all about, its a good reminder about the actual status of things we’ve been hearing about forever.

Full details are below.  The event is free.

CHAMPS – CAPITOL HILL’S CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, HOSTS EVENING PROGRAM ON REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT ON AND NEAR CAPITOL HILL, INCLUDING NOMA, H STREET, N.E. AND NEAR NORTHEAST

       Councilmember Tommy Wells to Speak

Co-sponsored by Capitol Riverfront, NoMA and Capitol Hill BIDs and Barracks Row and H Street Main Street Organizations

When will key sites on H Street and in NOMA be developed?   What is the status of development of and near the Capital City/Florida Market,GallaudetUniversity, near Northeast and lower Trinidad?   What shape will such development take?  Ward 6 is the recipient of more economic development investment than any other ward in the city and the southern part of Ward 5 is poised to generate its own economic development.

CHAMPS, the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce, is sponsoring an educational series on real estate-related issues to help the community better understand the pipeline of projects recently developed or coming to Capitol Hill, NoMa, near NE and other areas.  The final program in the series, on Tuesday, May 8, at 7pm, will feature developments north of East Capitol Streetand east of North Capitol Street.

The program will feature presentations highlighting various development initiatives, and guest speakers will provide development overviews of the subject areas and the projects.  Councilmember Tommy Wells will present his own development objectives and address questions about active and planned projects.

Co-sponsors include the Capitol Hill BID, Capitol Riverfront BID, NoMA BID, and the Barracks Row and H Street Main Streets.  The full series has included two sessions.  The first session, held April 17, covered development activity south ofEast Capitol Streetand east ofSouth Capitol Street, focusing on projects such as the Capitol Riverfront, Hine School development, and Reservation 13.   Sixty residents attended the overview, many commenting on the high quality of the presentations and the benefits of seeing a professionally produced update on the status of all of the area’s high-profile projects.

The May 8th program will be at the Sprenger Theatre in the Atlas Performing Arts Center at1333 H Street, N.E. This venue is generously being made available by the Atlas.   The sessions are being coordinated and led by Jacques DePuy and other attorneys of the Washington law firm Greenstein DeLorme & Luchs.  No admission fees will be charged for these events.

Please plan to join with CHAMPS and attend this exciting program.
