greenHILLhome: Christmas Tree Recycling

uploaded to flickr.com by stevendepolo

No one really likes taking down the Christmas decorations when the holiday passes.  It’s not quite as exciting as putting them up and getting ready for a visit from Santa or holiday meals with family and friends, unless you’re one of a select group that really enjoys sweeping up pine needles.  It’s a necessary evil of the Christmas holiday, and if you prefer a real (cut) tree then you should know your sweeping up the needles and getting that tree outside in a timely fashion benefits the city and the environment.

The DC Department of Public Works will be collecting Christmas treee, wreaths, and other greenery from January 3 through the 14.  Residents should place trees and greens (without decorations) in the treeboxes in front of their houses.  Trees should not be in plastic or cloth bags.  Trees collected by January 14 will be recycled into mulch that is used in community gardens, planted traffic islands and medians, and other cultivated areas cared for by the city.

Trees not collected by January 14 should be set out with residential trash and will be collected during normal trash pick-up as space allows in the trash trucks.
