Thanksgiving isn’t just about food, football and family. It’s also about appreciating what we have, and for sharing with others. In that spirit, we wanted to share a few of the ways that you can give back this Thanksgiving, right in our neighborhood. This is far from a comprehensive list, so please feel free to add more opportunities in the comments.
Stop by the H Street FRESHFARM Market this Saturday (November 19) – this is the last weekend for it, and FRESHFARM Market will be collecting food for the needy This drive is different than most, in that they accept both FRESH and non-perishable foods. People can shop at market and donate foods, or make cash/check donations which FRESHFARM uses to buy foods directly from the farmers. Last year, we collected hundreds of dollars which we used to buy food in bulk. Our gleaning partner (First Church Christ, Holiness) used the food to prepare meals for residents of Brookland Manor. More information can be found on their Facebook Page.
Eliot-Hine Middle School is doing a coat drive. Drop off coats before December 1. More information can be found here.
Capitol Hill Group Ministry is doing their annual basket drive. You need to sign up TODAY and drop off the food by the 21st. More information can be found here. They also need volunteers to drop off the baskets on Thanksgiving Day. Sign up here if you’re able to help out!
