Tuesday Morning Circle Time

Morning all! I hope your Labor Day weekend was spent grilling, swimming and frolicking. We had great weather for the most part and if you didn’t read the paper or watch the news to hear about our nation’s dismal jobs situation then you could have some real fun!

The summer has officially come to an end and we must now turn our attention to far more serious endeavors. What will you be for Halloween??

I just can’t get too melancholy about the end of summer when the pleasures of autumn are so delicious. The honey crisp apples at the H Street Farmer’s market were crunchy and sweet. Pure apple perfection. They shared a table with the last of summer’s peaches. The edible representation of the straddling season we are in now the carefree summer fun is behind us gone but the sweaters will remain in the attic for another month or so.

So tell me, what did you do this weekend?

Maria:  I kicked off the weekend with awesome comfort food at Tunnicliffs after major playground thunderdome on Friday– mmm, meatloaf love!  Saturday surprised me with the first trickle of birthday greetings and breakfast from “Magels and Miguettes” –mm, fresh-squeezed OJ love!  A pedicure at Capitol Nails was much more special after running into a friend I hadn’t seen in a while.  Then, it was off to an early birthday celebration (with mom and Nichole) with loads of cheeses and wine at the superb Cheesetique, followed by a dainty macaron at ACKC and vanilla frozen custard at Dairy
Godmother– mm, lactose-tolerance love!  Sunday found me well-rested and ready to start a new year, and it ended with good friends, fun songs, and a serenade!  Monday has been low-key, except for going over to the National Building Museum to take pictures of the CANstruction. Much love to the Capital Area Food Bank, and to the CaBi
made entirely out of cans!

Jon: I had a full weekend of family time as my dad came to visit.  We had a wonderful dinner Friday night at Lavagna, followed by a variety of desserts from Hello Cupcake and 32 Below.  Saturday included a trip to Eastern Market for some pickles and peppers (but not pickled peppers) and ended at the Nationals game with a bottom-of-the-ninth win for the
Nats.  Sunday we caught up on yard work and planted a few new shrubs and perennials. Monday we hosted a barbecue for family and friends, though rain kept us indoors for the afternoon. winners.

Nichole: I started the weekend with the Friday concert at Yards Park and quickly regretted that it was my first time down there for the Friday night concerts! Afterwards, we headed up to Lola’s for a few games of shuffleboard. Saturday I headed to Del Ray to celebrate Maria’s birthday with cheese and custard. Sunday afternoon was spent at home on my couch with the Gilmore Girls and homemade eggs benedict, followed by more birthday celebrating and karaoke-ing at Banana Cafe, followed by cocktails on my patio. Monday was delightfully lazy, and I lamented the symbolic end of a really fun summer.

Jen: Friday night we watched Tangled while eating pizza, the male middle schooler actually voted with me on that one. Saturday I went to Bikram and that evening we met friends for dinner at Franklins in Hyattesville. Brew pub+Toy Store=Awesome. Sunday we had brunch with my mother in law in Fairfax and checked out the Maloof Cup at the new RFK skatepark. That evening I celebrated the existence of the lovelyandtalented Ms. Maria Carey. Monday we cleaned the house, went to the pool and said farewell to summer with peach-raspberry cobbler for dessert.
