To Do List

Down the Shore

Growing up in New Jersey I spent the better part of my summers down the shore–though many a grammarian would prefer I say “at the beach.” Memorial Day meant more time on the boat and at the beach, while Labor Day represented the end of everything good and wonderful about summer. However, Labor Day also signaled the many great things to come: a new school year and a new football season, apple cider donuts enjoyed after an afternoon of apple picking, and the start of the ever expanding holiday season—which begins right around Halloween and lasts through Christmas. Bring on Labor Day because fall is wonderful!

In the District the three-day weekend, including Labor Day, brings other great things, like easy access to tables at favorite restaurants, fewer crowds at Eastern Market and parking (oh, the parking!) when our friends and neighbors head out of town for one last weekend of fun, whether that be down the shore or at the beach.

If you are like me—happy to enjoy your three-day weekend on the Hill—read on to see what the Hill has to offer those of us left behind!

Baseball
Have you heard of a little team called the Nationals? They are back in town this weekend (and all next week). Stop by the park and root, root, root for your home team. Stick around after the game on Saturday for a free concert featuring the band Lifehouse. Game Times: Friday, 7:05 pm; Saturday, 7:05 pm; Sunday, 1:35 pm; Monday (against the LA Dodgers), 1:05 pm

Music and Arts
If music is more your thing, be sure to plan a trip to the Capitol’s west lawn on Sunday evening, where the National Symphony Orchestra will perform the music of John Philip Sousa and Duke Ellington. If I didn’t have you with National Symphony Orchestra (how could I not?), the “Godfather of Go-Go” Chuck Brown will also be on hand to perform. Check out Lauren’s post for more details.

Yards Park, which is quickly becoming one of the Hill’s premier destinations for fun and merriment, has added additional dates to its Friday evening concert series, so be sure to head south this Friday (stop when you hit the river) and enjoy the festivities. For more information, visit yardspark.org.

If your inner child or your actual child loves to move and groove, be sure to catch Mr. Skip from 5-7 pm at Marvelous Market this Friday. While Mr. Skip may struggle with the order of the letters in the Alphabet Song, he will win your heart with his version of Yellow Submarine.

Have you checked out the movies at the Atlas? Me neither, and frankly I am ashamed of myself. The Atlas Summer Film Series concludes this weekend, so this is your last chance to take in a flick at the Atlas. Choose from “Brokeback Mountain” on Thursday, “Grease” on Friday, “The Goonies” (my pick!) on Saturday and “She’s Gotta Have It” on Sunday. For more information, including movie times, visit the Atlasarts.org.
